Sunday Bloody Sunday
Saul Williams Lyrics

I can't believe the news today
I can't close my eyes
And make it go away

How long
How long, must we sing this song
How long
How long

'Cause tonight
We can be as one
Tonight

Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall

Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday (Sunday, bloody Sunday)
Sunday, bloody Sunday

And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart

Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday

How long
How long, must we sing this song
How long
How long

'Cause tonight
We can be as one
Tonight
Tonight, tonight
Tonight, tonight

Sunday, bloody Sunday (Sunday, bloody Sunday)
Sunday, bloody Sunday

Wipe your tears away
Wipe your tears away
Wipe your tears away
Wipe your tears away

And it's true
We are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today
The millions cry (Sunday, bloody Sunday)
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die (Sunday, bloody Sunday)

The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won
On

Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Saul William's song Sunday Bloody Sunday reflect on the events surrounding the Bloody Sunday massacre that occurred on January 30th, 1972, in Derry, Northern Ireland. The first stanza of the song conveys the sense of shock and disbelief that William and others felt upon hearing about the tragedy. The use of repetition in the lyrics "I can't believe the news today" and “How long, how long, must we sing this song” is meant to highlight the continued struggle for peace and the pain that comes along with it. The line "I can't close my eyes and make it go away" conveys the idea that the trauma cannot be ignored or forgotten, but must be faced head on.

The chorus of the song serves as a call to action, emphasizing the need for unity and a push towards peace. The phrase "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" itself is a reference to the event that inspired the song, the killing of unarmed civil rights protesters by British soldiers on a Sunday in Derry. The lyrics are a plea for people to come together, to "be as one" and "wipe your tears away" as the real battle for peace has just begun.

The final verse references the distancing that can occur between people and events when they are reduced to media consumption. The line "fact is fiction and TV reality" alludes to how the media can distort and blur the truth. The lyrics "we eat and drink while tomorrow they die" is a reference to the ongoing conflict in Northern Ireland, which many people around the world, who are not directly affected by the conflict, can choose to ignore.

Easily the best rapper of the current era. Even when he covers the classic non-rap song, he is full of emotion. Every word in his songs has a meaning. Discalimer: This is coming from someone who does not listen to a lot of rap

both this version and the U2 version are amazing. what i like about this one is that it speaks more to a younger generation. in the midst of a war without end and mistreatment of peoples everywhere, not just abroad but in our own country, it is a ripe time for another artist to take this song and make it anew.
