Madame Pipi
Saule Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The song "Madame Pipi" by Saule tells the story of a woman who works as a toilet attendant. She is sitting at her little yellow flowered table amidst the odors of the restroom, feeling unhappy. Her food is in a deteriorating state and her mood reflects that. Yet, there is something sublime about her. Her collection of twenty centime coins glimmer in her dish, but the real shimmer is in her attitude. She is completely immersed in her own world, making her own movie. Even as she goes about her mundane job of cleaning up the messes of strangers, there is a gracefulness to her movements and a certain beauty in her ways. She is altogether more stylish and classy than the busy people who rush past her in their suits.

The chorus of the song pays tribute to the grace and style of this woman. Saule sings that Madame Pipi has more style than all of the show-business stars, and more class than those people who wear a three-piece suit. Her work is to sanitize the most doubtful corners of the restrooms, and she does it with a sense of purpose as if she were in a church. Despite the tedium of her work, Madame Pipi has her own little world, and it is evident in her demeanor.

Despite her seeming contentment while at work, Madame Pipi also has a life outside of it. She waits for her train in the evenings with a light heart, admiring her starry sky. When she dandles on the train track, a grin like a fairy spreads across her face. Even though the existence of this happy, content world might only be in the singer's imagination, it is real to her.
