Sault Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Whether we know it or we do not
We win without trying
We win while we are dying
Mommy's tears fall and still we win
How do they do it?
Must be the devil himself
But angels can look like devils
Do not be afraid
Be a man
Every day, I get a little stronger
Stronger than you
Do not be surprised
The chickens have come home to roost
The lyrics of Sault's song X emphasize the power of human beings as creators, regardless of the extent of their knowledge about it. The song states that individuals can win despite challenges, even when they are in the process of dying. It speaks to the resilience and strength of people, even in the face of hardships. It then goes on to ask how some individuals are able to succeed despite the devil’s influence, while also acknowledging that angels can sometimes appear to be devils if caught up in an evil gaze.
The song encourages people not to be afraid and to be brave. It is a call to stand up and face life's challenges like the powerful creators that we are. The chorus of the song echoes this sentiment by saying that every day, the singer gets stronger, eventually becoming stronger than those who may have attempted to hold them back. Finally, the song ends with the phrase "Do not be surprised, the chickens have come home to roost," which can be interpreted to mean that the consequences of an individual's actions will eventually catch up to them.
