The band first reached substantial commercial success with its third studio album Fight for the Rock (1986), which peaked at number 158 on the Billboard 200. Its next four albums—Hall of the Mountain King (1987), Gutter Ballet (1989), Streets: A Rock Opera (1991) and Edge of Thorns (1993)—were also successful but more critically acclaimed than Fight for the Rock. On October 17, 1993, six months after the release of Edge of Thorns, guitarist Criss Oliva was killed in a car accident. Following his death, Jon (along with producer Paul O'Neill) decided to continue Savatage in memory of his brother. The band released four more studio albums, and went through several line-up changes before going on an extended hiatus in 2002. During the years—partly even before the hiatus—members founded various new bands such as Jon Oliva's Pain, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Circle II Circle and Doctor Butcher. On August 2, 2014, Savatage announced that they were reuniting for the 2015 Wacken Open Air; despite having discussed the possibility of more shows and new music, the band went on hiatus once again. Although Savatage technically remains inactive, half of the members of the band claimed in interviews during throughout 2020 and 2021 that they have been working on new material for a possible follow-up to Poets and Madmen (2001).

(To) put them all in play
A covering of treasons
That one by one we let slip away
A solitary dancer
So lost upon her stage
Felt you there before you were born
Balanced your dreams upon the edge of thorns
But I don't think about you anymore
A study made from winter
Of summers long ago
And dreams that use to glitter
Safely now hidden under snow
And so we end this chapter
And let the stage lights fade
I have seen you on the edge of dawn
Felt you there before you were born
Balanced your dreams upon the edge of thorns
But I don't think about you anymore
In "Edge of Thorns," Savatage explores themes of regret, missed opportunities, and the passage of time. The opening lines mention offering up reasons to play, which may suggest a sense of missed opportunities, as if someone has not been taking advantage of all the chances life has offered. The next line talks about a "covering of treasons," which could refer to missed chances or bad decisions that build up over time.
The second verse shifts to addressing a solitary dancer who seems to be struggling on her stage. This image may represent someone who is isolated and struggling to find their place in life. The chorus, with its repeated reference to the "edge of thorns", suggests that the singer has been living on the precipice of something important and potentially dangerous. Yet even though they have been balancing their dreams on this edge, they do not think about them or the person they once were anymore, highlighting the theme of missed or neglected opportunities.
The third verse concerns memories of a past that has been buried and forgotten, "safely now hidden under snow." It seems that the singer is ready to let this chapter of their life end, indicated by the line "And so we end this chapter, and let the stage lights fade." This may suggest that the singer is ready to move forward and leave the past behind, even if it means accepting that some opportunities have been lost forever.
Overall, "Edge of Thorns" is a poignant reflection on the fleeting nature of time and the consequences of missed opportunities.

My dad put his studio headphones on my mother's stomach while she was pregnant with me. He mostly played Savatage through them. Once I was born, he would play this song through his speakers and I would fall right asleep. Been a metalhead ever since.
