Follow Me
Savatage Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I really want to know
What you had in store
I couldn't really tell
Perhaps it's just as well
I came here with a dream
And I just had to see
If my dream would soar
I knocked on every door

His whole life was written
Written there inside
The new weekly bible
His modern T.V. Guide
Every night he stares back at the screen, yeah

A man only sees want he wants to see
When he's in his mind
Where he is that he wants to be
Living in a world where he's safe from reality
Won't you take a chance on this night
And follow me
Won't you follow me (repeat)

Don't need no super heros
Don't need no movie stars
Don't need no politicians
In big black shiny cars
Don't need no preacher
Whose church is my T.V.

A man only sees what he wants to see
When he's in his mind
Where he is what he wants to be
Living in a world where he's safe from reality
Won't you take a chance on this night child
And follow me
Won't you follow me (repeat)

Once was a broken hero
The kind that we all know
The kind that hides inside us
For we never show
The kind we say that could never be me

His whole life was written
Written there inside
The new weekly bible
His modern T.V. Guide
Stare back at the screen, yeah yeah

A man only sees want he wants to see

Overall Meaning

The song Follow Me by Savatage is a powerful ballad that speaks to the human desire for acceptance, validation and escape from the harsh realities of life. It starts with the singer who is determined to know what is in store for him. He has a dream that he wants to pursue and knocks on every door to achieve it. The next few stanzas speak about the various influences in life that shape our thoughts and beliefs. The singer is shown here as being tranquilized by the modern T.V. Guide that promises to guide him towards a better life. Every night he stares back at the screen, lost in the imaginary world that the guide portrays - a world where he is safe from the harsh realities of life. But the singer realizes the elusive nature of such a world and invites others to take a chance and follow him towards the truth.

The song also has a strong anti-establishment tone. It speaks about the things we don't need - politicians, movie stars, and preachers - who we look up to as heroes but aren't necessarily good for us. Through the lines "A man only sees what he wants to see, when he's in his mind, where he is what he wants to be, living in a world where he's safe from reality", the song implies that we often live in our heads and build an artificial world to escape our harsh realities. However, the song encourages us to break free from this mindset and invites us to follow the singer towards a better life filled with truth and reality.
