Miles Away
Savatage Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And a cool, cool rain comes down
On a world burned by the sun
And the moon arises like a child
And the moment is undone
And the stars never say what they see
As the moon flirts with shadows it makes
Through the fallen trees
Some would wait for the morning light
But I fall asleep 'til I'm safe
In the arms of night

Yeah

Let the darkness roll in
Let it wipe the light away
In the distance
Always calling
Morpheus he beckons play
Still the morning is preordained
But I believe light is the source of all our pain
It reveals the smallest sin
But dark covers all and will always take you
Armed and gunning
I'll be running
Always just before the day
In the distance
Day is dawning
But I'm already miles away, miles away

In the night there's wonder
Always there for you to see
In the light of morning
Visions fade
And dreams can flee

With the darkness the night forgives
Covers our scars and lets
The lost souls live
And the morning's a distant fear
But if we move fast they'll never find us

Armed and gunning
I'll be running
Through a world that's in decay
Let them thunder, stare and wonder
Cause I'm already miles away, miles away, yeah
Oh miles away

I've been running
Armed and gunning
Always just before the day
In the distance
Day is dawning
But I'm already miles away
Miles away yeah yeah yeah yeah
Miles miles away
Miles away yeah
Miles miles away, oh yeah
Away, away, away

And the rain comes down

That solo brings tears to my eyes. So fierce, yet insanely melodic and tasteful. Criss Oliva.

@edgeharper5929

When I was a kid, only 12 years old, this song reached out to me. I was so ready to leave my little hometown to see the world. And after working out of town and being far away I soon realized that all I really wanted to be was closer to my family and friends... Life is crazy like that. Thank you Savatage.

@marknapier5125

This lineup made one of the crispest, clearest, most electrically-charged albums of the band's entire career. Zak never sounded so great, and Criss' playing was just on another level...huge fan of this sound \m/

@setifaast

The emotion in Chriss's playing. Beautiful.

One of my favorite  Savatage tunes! Chriss is phenomenal on this album. I read on Wikipedia that this was one of the last songs he wrote with his brother Jon. Makes it that much more special.

@pervotheclown2199

This song is amazing and " Savatage " should have gotten Grammys, Gold , Platinum sales . Trans Siberian Orchestra got the record sales ...............but Savatage and Jon and Criss Oliva should have been way bigger . And the sad part is that nobody has heard " Miles Away " except for Sava Legion fans . Criss Oliva gets killed by a drunk driver and nobody knows who he is or was ..................Kurt Cobain kills himself and then gets put upon a pedestal " like he was a God "...................meanwhile Criss Oliva writes and plays circles around the grunge artist. ( only Savatage fans knows how great Criss was , and by God let the world know because if you look up " miles away " on Youtube a 1000 videos pop up before Savatage )

@Glamosapien

i think without realizing it criss oliva became one of the strongest influences on my playing, though probably more of their earlier stuff. this album features some of the most complicated guitaring criss ever did, some of this album borders on old progressive metal here and there. i think it could be called a masterpiece, an essential for new fans along with hall of the mountain kind which were the first 2 i added to my cd collection

@TheAxe4Ever

When this album first came out and I bought it I was completely smitten by the painting of the gorgeous girl on her knees holding the rose. “ is it possible to have a crush on a girl in a painting?” I asked myself. Then alas! I found out it was a painting styled after Criss’ wife Dawn. So out of respect for one of my all-time favorite guitarists and songwriters, I could no longer look longingly at the lovely girl with the rose in the painting. Rest In Peace Dawn. Tell Criss we are all still thinking of and miss him......and you.

@justinkantner7162

IMO the perfect ending to an album and musical legacy of Chris Oliva, still one of my favorite songs. RIP Chris \../
