The band first reached substantial commercial success with its third studio album Fight for the Rock (1986), which peaked at number 158 on the Billboard 200. Its next four albums鈥擧all of the Mountain King (1987), Gutter Ballet (1989), Streets: A Rock Opera (1991) and Edge of Thorns (1993)鈥攚ere also successful but more critically acclaimed than Fight for the Rock. On October 17, 1993, six months after the release of Edge of Thorns, guitarist Criss Oliva was killed in a car accident. Following his death, Jon (along with producer Paul O'Neill) decided to continue Savatage in memory of his brother. The band released four more studio albums, and went through several line-up changes before going on an extended hiatus in 2002. During the years鈥攑artly even before the hiatus鈥攎embers founded various new bands such as Jon Oliva's Pain, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Circle II Circle and Doctor Butcher. On August 2, 2014, Savatage announced that they were reuniting for the 2015 Wacken Open Air; despite having discussed the possibility of more shows and new music, the band went on hiatus once again. Although Savatage technically remains inactive, half of the members of the band claimed in interviews during throughout 2020 and 2021 that they have been working on new material for a possible follow-up to Poets and Madmen (2001).

Stay With Me Awhile
Savatage Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The silence weaves a tapestry of once enchanted themes
The shadows listen carefully and question what it means
For stories have lives of their own
But what good's a story whose end is unknown
Stay with me
For a moment in a memory
That time cannot defile
Stay with me
Where the night still offers amnesty
And the ending is tomorrow's unborn child
And stay with me awhile
The darkness covers everything and carefully watches all
It hides behind the storm's lightning and cushions every fall
And everything it witnesses it always can recall
Like things that the heart can regret
Bury in time and then try to forget
Stay with me
For the little night that's left to be
For a moment in a memory
That time cannot defile
Stay with me
While the night still offers amnesty
And the ending is still yet to be tomorrow's unborn child
And stay with me awhile
The lyrics to Savatage's song Stay With Me Awhile are full of powerful imagery and a sense of longing. The song seems to be about holding onto memories and the past, especially when faced with the unknown future. The first verse sets the stage with the idea of the universe holding forgotten dreams and the silence weaving a tapestry of old enchantments. The shadows are questioning the meaning of all this, perhaps highlighting the human tendency to seek out meaning and purpose in things that may not have any.
The chorus urges someone to stay with the singer, to hold onto the remaining moments of the night and the memories they represent. Time cannot defile these memories, as they are impervious to the march of time. The idea of the ending being "tomorrow's unborn child" is particularly powerful, suggesting that there is always a possibility of new beginnings and that the future is not set in stone.
The second verse brings in the concept of darkness, which covers everything and remembers all things witnessed. This may represent the darker times in life, which are often the most memorable and striking. The heart can regret these things, but even buried in time they cannot be forgotten. The sense of urgency and the need to hold onto memories is emphasized in the repeated plea to "stay with me awhile."
Overall, the song encourages listeners to hold onto the good moments in life, even as time marches on and the future may seem uncertain. Memories are powerful and enduring, and even if the ending is unknown, there is always the possibility of new beginnings.

This entire album is completely badass. From this track, through Comissar, Morphine Child, Surrender, and the epic closing Bohemian Rhapsody-like Back to a Reason, one of Savatage's finest songs. Just... Great album, really.

+metalbornmetalbred Yea, though (in my biased opinion) this version rips because it retains the original rawness and madness and whatnot else - while TSO has published a more 'polished' version, due to TSO having a more professional than 'Tage's personal approach to these songs. :)

+Miroslav Zuberec What's really cool is that they still play a few of the songs from this album live, as TSO.
