The band first reached substantial commercial success with its third studio album Fight for the Rock (1986), which peaked at number 158 on the Billboard 200. Its next four albums—Hall of the Mountain King (1987), Gutter Ballet (1989), Streets: A Rock Opera (1991) and Edge of Thorns (1993)—were also successful but more critically acclaimed than Fight for the Rock. On October 17, 1993, six months after the release of Edge of Thorns, guitarist Criss Oliva was killed in a car accident. Following his death, Jon (along with producer Paul O'Neill) decided to continue Savatage in memory of his brother. The band released four more studio albums, and went through several line-up changes before going on an extended hiatus in 2002. During the years—partly even before the hiatus—members founded various new bands such as Jon Oliva's Pain, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Circle II Circle and Doctor Butcher. On August 2, 2014, Savatage announced that they were reuniting for the 2015 Wacken Open Air; despite having discussed the possibility of more shows and new music, the band went on hiatus once again. Although Savatage technically remains inactive, half of the members of the band claimed in interviews during throughout 2020 and 2021 that they have been working on new material for a possible follow-up to Poets and Madmen (2001).

Turns To Me

Looks in the mirror
And sees what she wanted to be
Safely unknown
To anyone near her
She sees what she wanted to see
And turns to me
And turns to
She was prophesied
For an early slide
Followed it to the letter
Well kept beauty queen
If there, always seen
Still you thought she'd know better
No erasing
The time you're wasting
But when you're wasting
You don't care
All those pieces
In short term leases
But when you need them
They're not there
For all those moments of yesterday
She's traded every tomorrow
And now all those moments are so far away
Ghosts haunt each word she would say
As she walks among the decay
She had oscar wilde's
Timeless sense of style
As had been her intention
Still she was afraid
Time must be repaid
And there'd be no redemption
Youth and time collide
She could not decide
On a certain direction
Time was catching up
Carefully made up
She avoided detection
For all those moments of yesterday
She's traded every tomorrow
And now all those moments are so far away
I saw it too
Closer than you
What else is there left to say
Wait for me now
I will be there for you
This I will vow
If you still want me to
But it won't be
This I have always known
And in the dark
There's no one to pray for me now
I don't understand what I'm feeling tonight
I don't understand but I'm waiting
Searching the shadows that fade in the light
But I'm feeling alive
Trying to survive
Float with the tide
Till you arrive and I
So he now turned to the ocean
Saying it was never meant to be
And the ocean never said a word
Though in truth she disagreed
And on the sand before him
While the waves broke gently white
The ocean listened carefully
As he told her of his life
I have been around the world
I've pursued the moon in flight
I have read the words of Shakespeare
By a midnight arctic light
I have run between the dragon's teeth
And lived to tell the tail
I have danced across a stardust sky
And never left a trail
I've seen things few could imagine
And I never will forget
But I've never had a family
And this I do regret
Now all I've loved have gone before me
And of the future I have great doubts
And though it seems I still have time left
I now feel time I can do without
And I have wondered to myself
Why should death set its own time
Is it just a final jest from fate
To add onto her other crimes?
For I have no wish to wait around
While all my senses fade
And one by one return the gifts
That youth so freely gave
Wired to some cold machine
That maps my every breath
And signals at the proper time
Less they should miss my death
And all this service I suspect
Is less done by goodwill
Than by the fear that they should miss
A final chance to bill
So I've decided to leave this world
And have devised a plan
To sail to sea in a small boat
Well out of sight of land
To sail once more upon the deep
Like a viking to his resting place
Then slip forever neath the waves
An exit with some grace
And the ship shall be my coffin
On this last voyage that I take
And my trail left through the water
Will be my final wake
I have done more than thought about this
On my life I've closed every door
I have left a will beside my bed
And the boat is there offshore
And all I ask is your assistance
When that ship is well away from the land
That you send a storm to embrace us
And take us gently in your hand
When he had finished speaking
Some points the ocean did concede
But when he said his final word
She once more disagreed
I'll think about this if I may
I need not rush the tide
For in this world of too little time
There's always time to die
You seem so eager to end this life
And with your death to dance
That you ignored his putrid breath
Now perfumed with romance
The sailor said you cannot understand
The needs or wants of men
So I'll ask you once more for your help
And I shall not ask again
Then the ocean pulled her waves back
And beckoned him stand near
And when he had stepped closer
She whispered in his ear
That every man
Is born you see
Beneath the sword
Damocles
For young and old
Are all alive
On that next beat
On which we ride
And that beat is such
A fragile thing
In both old men
Or youthful king
And that beat
Stands all alone you see
Between us
And black eternity
And though death is surely
Each man's fate
Until that time
Let each man wait
So be careful as you go through life
What you romanticize
I find such things are rarely true
And far more rarely wise
The sailor then listened carefully
And every thought was filed
And though he was still not quite convinced
He agreed to wait awhile
And meanwhile further down the beach
There stood a younger man
And he too felt the sand of time
Was running through his hands
But this youth felt they ran too fast
As he stood near a rusting dock
And heard the waves marking time
Like some relentless clock
He felt his future was not here
Of this he had no doubt
And even though he was eighteen
His time was running out
The song “Turns To Me” by Savatage talks about two separate characters who are both experiencing feelings of regret and hopelessness in their lives. The first character is a woman who had dreams of becoming something greater, but now finds herself alone and unseen. The second character is a young man who feels as though time is slipping away from him too quickly, and that he is running out of time to do what he really wants to do in life.
The lyrics delve into feelings of loss, regret, and uncertainty. They highlight the notion that time is a fragile thing and that it waits for no one. The characters in the song struggle with the realization that they can no longer go back and change the choices they made in life. The final verse speaks to the idea that every man is born under the sword of Damocles and that no one can change their fate. The song encourages listeners to be careful of the things they romanticize in life and to live in the present moment.

There is nothing more to add or communicate
Wait for me now
Have patience and wait for my arrival
I will be there for you
I promise to support and be present for you
This I will vow
I solemnly swear and commit to it
If you still want me to
If you still desire my presence
But it won't be
But it won't happen
This I have always known
I have always been aware of this fact
And in the dark
In times of uncertainty or despair
There's no one to pray for me now
There is no one to offer prayers or support me in those moments
I don't understand what I'm feeling tonight
I am confused about my emotions in this moment
I don't understand but I'm waiting
I don't comprehend, but I am patiently anticipating
Searching the shadows that fade in the light
Exploring the hidden aspects that become visible in the light
But I'm feeling alive
I am experiencing a sense of vitality
Trying to survive
Struggling to endure and persevere
Float with the tide
Going with the flow and adapting to circumstances
Till you arrive and I
Until you come and join me
So he now turned to the ocean
He shifted his attention and focus to the sea
Saying it was never meant to be
Expressing that their connection was never destined or intended
And the ocean never said a word
The ocean remained silent, offering no response
Though in truth she disagreed
Despite her silence, she had an opposing opinion
And on the sand before him
In the sandy area in front of him
While the waves broke gently white
As the waves crashed softly, creating white foam
The ocean listened carefully
The ocean attentively paid attention to him
As he told her of his life
As he shared the details and experiences of his existence
I have been around the world
I have traveled extensively
I've pursued the moon in flight
I have chased after the moon's ever-changing position
I have read the words of Shakespeare
I have engaged with Shakespeare's writings
By a midnight arctic light
Under the illumination of the midnight arctic sun
I have run between the dragon's teeth
I have taken risks and faced dangers
And lived to tell the tail
And survived to share the story
I have danced across a stardust sky
I have experienced a sense of euphoria and wonder
And never left a trail
And left no trace or evidence behind
I've seen things few could imagine
I have witnessed things that most people cannot comprehend
And I never will forget
And those memories will forever remain with me
But I've never had a family
But I have never had a close-knit group of loved ones
And this I do regret
And I feel remorse or sadness because of it
Now all I've loved have gone before me
Everyone I have loved has passed away before me
And of the future I have great doubts
I am uncertain and skeptical about what lies ahead
And though it seems I still have time left
Despite having time remaining, I feel that it is meaningless
I now feel time I can do without
I no longer value or desire the passing of time
And I have wondered to myself
I have pondered and questioned internally
Why should death set its own time
Why should death dictate its own timing
Is it just a final jest from fate
Is it a final prank or irony orchestrated by destiny
To add onto her other crimes?
To further contribute to fate's other wrongdoings
For I have no wish to wait around
I have no desire to linger or remain
While all my senses fade
As my senses gradually diminish in strength
And one by one return the gifts
And one by one lose the abilities or faculties
That youth so freely gave
That were once bestowed upon me during my youth
Wired to some cold machine
Connected to a life-sustaining machine
That maps my every breath
That monitors and documents each inhalation and exhalation
And signals at the proper time
And notifies others of the correct moment
Less they should miss my death
So they don't miss the occasion of my passing
And all this service I suspect
I suspect that all this assistance
Is less done by goodwill
Is motivated less by kindness or compassion
Than by the fear that they should miss
But rather due to their fear of overlooking
A final chance to bill
The last opportunity to make monetary charges or expenses
So I've decided to leave this world
So I have made the decision to depart from this existence
And have devised a plan
And I have created a detailed strategy
To sail to sea in a small boat
To embark on a voyage alone in a small boat
Well out of sight of land
Far away from any visible shoreline
To sail once more upon the deep
To experience the open ocean again
Like a viking to his resting place
Like a viking sailing to his final resting place
Then slip forever neath the waves
Then to forever descend beneath the waves
An exit with some grace
A departure marked by dignity and poise
And the ship shall be my coffin
The ship itself will serve as my burial vessel
On this last voyage that I take
On this final journey that I embark on
And my trail left through the water
And my path left behind in the water
Will be my final wake
Will act as my last farewell
I have done more than thought about this
I have contemplated this deeply and extensively
On my life I've closed every door
I have shut off all possibilities and opportunities in my life
I have left a will beside my bed
I have prepared a legal document stating my final wishes
And the boat is there offshore
And the boat is waiting just offshore
And all I ask is your assistance
And the only thing I request is your help
When that ship is well away from the land
When the ship has distanced itself from the shoreline
That you send a storm to embrace us
That you unleash a storm to surround and engulf us
And take us gently in your hand
And guide us safely through the storm
When he had finished speaking
After he had completed his statement
Some points the ocean did concede
The ocean reluctantly granted some of his requests
But when he said his final word
But when he uttered his last remark
She once more disagreed
She once again expressed her opposition
I'll think about this if I may
I will consider this request, if you allow
I need not rush the tide
There is no need to hasten or rush the natural flow of events
For in this world of too little time
In this world where time is scarce
There's always time to die
There is always time to face death
You seem so eager to end this life
You appear enthusiastic about bringing your life to a close
And with your death to dance
And to use your death as an opportunity to celebrate
That you ignored his putrid breath
That you disregarded the deceptive allure of death
Now perfumed with romance
Now masked with a romantic and tempting fragrance
The sailor said you cannot understand
The sailor argued that she cannot comprehend
The needs or wants of men
The desires and requirements of men
So I'll ask you once more for your help
So I will request your assistance once again
And I shall not ask again
And I will not make the request a third time
Then the ocean pulled her waves back
Then the ocean retreated with its waves
And beckoned him stand near
And invited him to come closer
And when he had stepped closer
And when he had moved nearer
She whispered in his ear
She spoke quietly and confidentially to him
That every man
That every person, regardless of gender
Is born you see
Is born, you understand
Beneath the sword
Under the looming threat of death
Damocles
Referring to the story of Damocles and the sword hanging above his head
For young and old
For both the young and the old
Are all alive
Have the capability to live and experience life
On that next beat
On the next moment or pulse of existence
On which we ride
On which we journey or traverse
And that beat is such
And that moment is so precious
A fragile thing
A delicate and vulnerable entity
In both old men
In both elderly individuals
Or youthful king
Or in young rulers or leaders
And that beat
And that moment of existence
Stands all alone you see
Is isolated and distinct, separate from everything else
Between us
Between each individual person
And black eternity
And the endless expanse of time
And though death is surely
And even though death is undoubtedly
Each man's fate
The destiny or ultimate end of every person
Until that time
Until that specific moment in the future
Let each man wait
Allow each person to patiently await their fate
So be careful as you go through life
Be cautious and mindful as you navigate existence
What you romanticize
Be aware of the things you idealize or romanticize
I find such things are rarely true
I have discovered that such things are seldom accurate
And far more rarely wise
And even less frequently wise or sensible
The sailor then listened carefully
The sailor then paid close attention, listening intently
And every thought was filed
And he mentally noted and categorized every thought
And though he was still not quite convinced
And although he was not completely persuaded yet
He agreed to wait awhile
He made the decision to be patient for a little longer
And meanwhile further down the beach
In the meantime, farther along the shoreline
There stood a younger man
There was a younger man standing
And he too felt the sand of time
He also sensed the passage of time slipping away
Was running through his hands
Was slipping through his fingers, escaping his grasp
But this youth felt they ran too fast
However, this young person believed that time was moving too quickly
As he stood near a rusting dock
Standing close to a decaying and corroded dock
And heard the waves marking time
And listened to the waves as they kept track of time
Like some relentless clock
Similar to an unyielding and unstoppable timepiece
He felt his future was not here
He believed that his destiny was not in this place
Of this he had no doubt
He was completely certain about this revelation
And even though he was eighteen
And even though he was only eighteen years old
His time was running out
His time was diminishing or coming to an end

Zak Stevens has one hell of a great voice.

Phenomenal track. Al Pitrelli at his best. Savatage's best album, truly iconic .....

Still the best album of all time, lyrically it's Shakespeare, musically it's Mozart. Artwork by Edgar Jerins is fantastic, I wrote to him a few years back and he sent me some of his other work as postcards. Great chap. Am still aiming to get a copy of this done by Jerins for the front room, that and the DWD album cover which he also did. Savatage , no comparisons.

As vezes fico me perguntando: como essa banda não e tão conhecida assim? Essa banda é perfeita! Tá no topo do rock mundial, não deve nada pra outra banda.
Chris Hagy
Musically, this has Jon 'Mountain King' Oliva stamped all over it; as it should be.

Love the lyricism in this one.
