The band first reached substantial commercial success with its third studio album Fight for the Rock (1986), which peaked at number 158 on the Billboard 200. Its next four albums—Hall of the Mountain King (1987), Gutter Ballet (1989), Streets: A Rock Opera (1991) and Edge of Thorns (1993)—were also successful but more critically acclaimed than Fight for the Rock. On October 17, 1993, six months after the release of Edge of Thorns, guitarist Criss Oliva was killed in a car accident. Following his death, Jon (along with producer Paul O'Neill) decided to continue Savatage in memory of his brother. The band released four more studio albums, and went through several line-up changes before going on an extended hiatus in 2002. During the years—partly even before the hiatus—members founded various new bands such as Jon Oliva's Pain, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Circle II Circle and Doctor Butcher. On August 2, 2014, Savatage announced that they were reuniting for the 2015 Wacken Open Air; despite having discussed the possibility of more shows and new music, the band went on hiatus once again. Although Savatage technically remains inactive, half of the members of the band claimed in interviews during throughout 2020 and 2021 that they have been working on new material for a possible follow-up to Poets and Madmen (2001).

The warrior stands alone
Visions of the fighting past
A thousands tales are told
Immortal
Let the battles of street life begin
They live their life
And they feel their own pain
The times that is chilling their bones
And they can't get away
Alone in the cold
Watching night turn into day
Armed to attack
The soldiers react
Kill or be killed
Is the life they live
Warriors, Warriors
Warriors of the world
Warriors, Warriors
Warriors of the world
On the streets they are roaming the night
Out to claim their domain
One more Pointless battle
With nothing to gain
And life is a hell for them
Living with the shadows of death
Scratching and clawing
Till no souls are left
Armed to attack
The soldiers react
Kill or be killed
Is the life they live
Warriors, Warriors
Warriors of the world
Warriors, Warriors
Warriors of the world
They call the streets of hell their home
They're not alone
A thousands tales are told
The streets of hell their home
Warriors, Warriors
Warriors of the world
Warriors, Warriors
Warriors of the world
"Warriors" is a song that portrays the lives of individuals who live by the rules of the street. The warrior in the song is a metaphorical representation of anyone who has fought hard in life, struggling through battles and hardships. The song begins with the warrior standing alone as the edge of midnight falls, haunted by visions of his past and the countless tales of battles he has faced. The chorus urges the warriors of the world to take up arms and fight, as they roam the dark and dangerous streets reclaiming their territories.
As the song progresses, we witness the warriors' lives, which are characterized by constant battles, leathers, chains, and pain - a life that is lived with the constant realization of death lurking around the corner. These individuals, who scratch and claw at life, live in the shadows of death, with the streets of hell as their home. Despite the dark and gritty nature of their lives, they are not alone, as there are thousands of tales of people who have fought and died on the streets.
