Freakish
Saves the Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I'm talking my words slip to the floor
And they crawl through your legs and slide under the back door
Rendering me freakish and dazed.
Well here I am. I don't know how to say this.

The only thing I know is awkward silence.
Your eyelids close when you're around me to shut me out.
So I'll go walking through the streets until my heels bleed
And I'll sing out my song in case the birds wish to sing along.

And I'll dig a tunnel to the center of the universe.
Well here I am. I don't know how to say this.
The only thing I know is awkward silence.
Your eyelids close when you're around me to shut me out.

I'll make my way across the frozen sea, beyond the blank horizon,
When I can forget "you and me" and get a decent night's sleep.
Well here I am. I don't know how to say this.
The only thing I know is awkward silence.

Your eyelids close when you're around me to shut me out.
Don't shut me out.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Saves The Day's song "Freakish" paints the picture of someone who is at a loss for words and seems to stumble upon them as they speak. This generates an image of a person who is nervous and possibly even socially inept, causing their words to feel like they slip and crawl through the listener's legs and under the back door. The singer of the song is left feeling freakish and dazed by their inability to articulate their feelings. The following lines express the feelings of rejection that the singer is experiencing. Awkward silence and closed eyelids around them point to a sort of shutting out and rejection by the person the singer is addressing. The singer becomes aware of their social ineptitude and awkwardness in certain company.

The chorus of the song showcases the singer’s decision to take action and leave. They decide to walk through the streets until their heels bleed and sing out their song - and even dig a tunnel to the center of the universe. The singer is ready to do whatever it takes to escape the discomfort they feel in their current social situation. The final lines of the song seem to plead with the addressed person to not shut them out, signifying that there is still some hope or possibility for acceptance.

This fucking album is so amazing, and after all these years still hits the mark. I don’t know why more people don’t know about it. But it made such an impression on me, I’ve listened to it countless times and the songs never fail to move me.

Same here!
I think it's really awesome to see how much love and nostalgia there currently is around the emo scene of the late 90's and early oughts. Such as Emo's not Dead and seeing emo/pop punk artists pop up on songs by newer artists! I sincerely love that.
However, I think it's insane how criminally underrated Saves the Day is, and to some extent, always has been. I've suggested and played a few of their albums for people over the last 10 years or so, who were otherwise super into this type of music or at least interested in it. And every time the response is the same. They fucking LOVE IT and they're simultaneously PISSED that they haven't heard them before! Meanwhile, inferior bands like Good Charlotte or whatever get so much more love and recognition. It's really a shame. Saves the Day is such a great band. Never put out a bad album. Seen them live a dozen times and it's always a fun and awesome show. Maybe someday one of their songs will be in a popular movie or Netflix show or something, and they will hopefully get the attention they deserve!
I think stranger things has at least 1 more season left lol. They could be the next "Running up that Hill" 😅
