After forming under the name Sefler in 1994, Saves the Day signed with the independent hardcore punk label Equal Vision and released their debut studio album in 1998. It was followed by Through Being Cool (1999), which featured their first single, "Shoulder to the Wheel." Stay What You Are was released in 2001, peaking at number 100 on the Billboard 200. It spawned two successful music videos on MTV2, for the singles "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish", and has since sold 300,000 copies. After the success, Saves the Day signed to Dreamworks Records, who co-released their next studio album, In Reverie, with Vagrant Records. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and number 4 on the Independent Albums chart.

Hell Is Here
Saves the Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The whole world's burning today
Staring into the grave
smoke into the sky
See the flames arise
Hell is here at last
Bridges buckle and snap
City swallowed by waves
say another prayer
Hoping things will change
Here under the stars
but I don't know why
Everyone you know will someday die
we all have to say goodbye
Let go of the love we share
Take all the smoke into my eyes
climb into the hearse
To watch the ocean burn
Nothing left but dust
In "Hell Is Here," Saves the Day delves into a heartbreaking and thought-provoking reflection on life's fragility and the sense of hopelessness that comes with witnessing a world in turmoil. The opening lines paint an apocalyptic picture of a world on fire, leaving the singer feeling speechless and powerless in the face of such devastating destruction. As the smoke rises and the flames grow, the lyrics take a bleak turn when the singer admits that "Hell is here at last."
It's clear that this isn't just a song about an isolated disaster, but a commentary on the darker aspects of humanity and the fragility of our existence. The lines about buildings collapsing, bridges buckling, and entire cities being swallowed by waves all highlight the transitory nature of human construction in the face of natural forces. Even when the singer utters a prayer in hopes of change, the admission that "I don't know why" reveals a sense of disappointment and resignation.
The final lines of the song, "We all have to say goodbye / Let go of the love we share / Take all the smoke into my eyes / Climb into the hearse / To watch the ocean burn / Nothing left but dust" offer a haunting image of the inevitability of death and the ultimate dissolution of all that we hold dear. Ultimately, "Hell is Here" serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of our existence and the importance of cherishing what we have while we can.
