After forming under the name Sefler in 1994, Saves the Day signed with the independent hardcore punk label Equal Vision and released their debut studio album in 1998. It was followed by Through Being Cool (1999), which featured their first single, "Shoulder to the Wheel." Stay What You Are was released in 2001, peaking at number 100 on the Billboard 200. It spawned two successful music videos on MTV2, for the singles "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish", and has since sold 300,000 copies. After the success, Saves the Day signed to Dreamworks Records, who co-released their next studio album, In Reverie, with Vagrant Records. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and number 4 on the Independent Albums chart.

Saves the Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That connection that we made during last summer's days?
Maybe I should be subtle or maybe I should be more pure
But I think we should talk about what we were going through
And I wonder what it would be like if we had
Kept up that aversion and maybe kept listing
All the people that we hated
And now I'm hoping that you'll change so we can see straight some day.
In these lyrics, the singer is reflecting on a past romantic relationship that occurred during the summer. The singer is contemplating reaching out to their former partner in order to re-establish a connection. The singer is unsure whether to approach this situation subtly or with more open honesty, but ultimately feels that they need to discuss what they went through during their time together. The lyrics suggest that the singer and their partner may have diverged in their values and beliefs since the relationship ended, but the singer is hopeful that their former partner may change and they can possibly see eye to eye in the future.

Ever think we should try to re-establish
Have you ever considered attempting to reignite
That connection that we made during last summer's days?
The bond we formed during those days of the previous summer?
Maybe I should be subtle or maybe I should be more pure
Perhaps my approach should be more delicate or virtuous
But I think we should talk about what we were going through
However, I believe it would benefit us to discuss what transpired
And I wonder what it would be like if we had
I find myself curious about what the outcome could have been if we
Kept up that aversion and maybe kept listing
Continued with our avoidance and continued to compile
All the people that we hated
A list of all the individuals we held disdain for
But isn't it ironic how you still have ideals and I still have nothing?
However, is it not paradoxical that you maintain your principles while I remain empty-handed?
And now I'm hoping that you'll change so we can see straight some day.
Now, my desire is for you to alter your ways so that one day we may have a clear perception
