After forming under the name Sefler in 1994, Saves the Day signed with the independent hardcore punk label Equal Vision and released their debut studio album in 1998. It was followed by Through Being Cool (1999), which featured their first single, "Shoulder to the Wheel." Stay What You Are was released in 2001, peaking at number 100 on the Billboard 200. It spawned two successful music videos on MTV2, for the singles "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish", and has since sold 300,000 copies. After the success, Saves the Day signed to Dreamworks Records, who co-released their next studio album, In Reverie, with Vagrant Records. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and number 4 on the Independent Albums chart.

My Sweet Fracture
Saves the Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
'Cause I'll rush right over
to shove some dirt right down your throat
It's nothing I have against you
You're just a creep and
you can't remember the last five years
What's a bond if it dissolves in water?
than you and your manipulations
I called my mom last night
She said, "Sweetie, you don't need someone
who's more fleeting than fall"
'Cause don't you love those leaves?
Don't you wish the orange stayed forever
And Crickets sang in the night all through winter?"
And I thought, slow down, Chris
Think of all the time this jerk
has fucked you up and left you down
And hey, I choose my company
by the beating of their hearts
Not the swelling of their heads
Besides, I'd rather forget the days we spent
Than try to stay afloat in shallow water.
Saves the Day's song "My Sweet Fracture" is an introspective track that delves into the subject of manipulative relationships. In the opening lines of the song, the singer addresses the subject directly, expressing a willingness to help in case of choking, but also a resentment towards their manipulative behavior. The lyrics imply that the subject of the song cannot be trusted and has no recollection of important events in the singer's life. The singer, in turn, takes a more self-reflective approach, questioning the value of a bond that inevitably dissolves in water and comparing it to the fleeting nature of fall.
As the song moves on, the singer's internal dialogue becomes clearer. He acknowledges the toxic nature of the relationship and muses on the ephemeral beauty of the world around him: the falling leaves and the singing crickets. He tries to slow himself down, reminding himself of the hurt inflicted and the manipulative nature of the person he's addressing. The song concludes on a note of self-respect and self-love, with the singer choosing the company of those who beat with their hearts instead of those who swell with their heads.
