After forming under the name Sefler in 1994, Saves the Day signed with the independent hardcore punk label Equal Vision and released their debut studio album in 1998. It was followed by Through Being Cool (1999), which featured their first single, "Shoulder to the Wheel." Stay What You Are was released in 2001, peaking at number 100 on the Billboard 200. It spawned two successful music videos on MTV2, for the singles "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish", and has since sold 300,000 copies. After the success, Saves the Day signed to Dreamworks Records, who co-released their next studio album, In Reverie, with Vagrant Records. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and number 4 on the Independent Albums chart.

Saves the Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I can't believe myself
Trying to be what you want me to be
I guess I can't catch up
[Chorus]
Once in awhile, making you smile
By singing with the radio
Staring into space like I'm not even there
I swear I'm not alone
You make me think that I live with a ghost
But my love still grows
[Chorus]
Once in awhile, making you smile
By singing with the radio
You're singing with the radio
We heard it on the radio
They're singing (Oh)
[Chorus]
Once in awhile, making you smile
By singing with the radio
You're singing with the radio
We heard it on the radio
You're singing with the radio
The opening lines of Saves the Day's song "Radio" reveal the singer's inner turmoil as he struggles to find his own identity while also trying to please his partner. He is aware that he is contorting himself into someone that he may not necessarily want to be, and hearing the words come out of his own mouth is a jarring reminder of this fact. The chorus follows, and despite the tension in the verses, the mood lightens as the singer sings about the simple pleasures of singing with the radio - a shared experience that brings joy to both himself and his partner. The final verse brings back some of the tension from the opening lines, as the singer feels as though he is invisible and living with a ghost - but he emphasizes that his love for his partner remains even as he struggles to find his own footing.
