After forming under the name Sefler in 1994, Saves the Day signed with the independent hardcore punk label Equal Vision and released their debut studio album in 1998. It was followed by Through Being Cool (1999), which featured their first single, "Shoulder to the Wheel." Stay What You Are was released in 2001, peaking at number 100 on the Billboard 200. It spawned two successful music videos on MTV2, for the singles "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish", and has since sold 300,000 copies. After the success, Saves the Day signed to Dreamworks Records, who co-released their next studio album, In Reverie, with Vagrant Records. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and number 4 on the Independent Albums chart.

What Went Wrong
Saves the Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There we were surrendering ourselves
To the local police
Paying them not to tell
While we waited we all
Sang a song of sorrow
Solely to remember
Leonard looked
Like a ghost gave him a foot massage
Molly shook like a fish
Dangling on a line
Walter wore women's clothes
Sang a song of sorrow
Solely to remember
What went wrong
We sang a song of sorrow
Solely to remember
What went wrong
In the darkness
We were all strip searched
Nothing was found
Suffering
From the full cavity search
We fell to our knees
To repent
I can recall right now
What we did
[Repeat x2]
We sang a song of sorrow
Solely to remember
What went wrong
In the darkness
We were all strip searched
Nothing was found
The song "What Went Wrong" by Saves The Day is a melancholic reflection on the events of a night that ended with the singer and their friends surrendering themselves to the local police, presumably after being caught doing something illegal or morally questionable. The opening lines reveal that they paid the police not to tell, indicating that they were hiding something that they didn't want others to know about. While waiting for the police, the group sings a "song of sorrow" to "solely remember what went wrong," suggesting that they are aware of the gravity of their situation and are trying to come to terms with it.
The second verse introduces some of the individuals who were present that night, with Leonard looking like a ghost and receiving a foot massage, Molly shaking like a fish on a line, and Walter wearing women's clothes. These details further emphasize the strange and potentially illicit nature of the group's actions. The lines "In the darkness / We were all strip searched / Nothing was found" suggest that the group was subjected to some form of punishment or interrogation by the police, which they are now looking back on with remorse. The repetition of the line "We sang a song of sorrow" at the end of each verse reinforces the theme of regret and the desire to understand where things went wrong.
