I Can't Get Next To You
Savoy Brown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I, my, my, my, my
Oh I,
Can turn the gray sky blue, I
You see I can make it rain, when I want it to, oh I
I can build a castle from a single grain of sand, I
You see I can make a ship sail, on dry land tell 'em yeah
I'm unhappy with all the powers I possess, yeah
Girl you're the key to my happiness and I
(I can't get next to you, babe )
(I can't get next to you)
I've trying a long time
(I can't get next to you, babe)
(I can't get next you)
I don't know what to do

I,
Oh I,
I, oh Lord
I can fly like a bird in the sky, oh I
And I can buy anything that money can buy, oh I
Can turn a river into a raging fire, oh I
And I can live forever if I so desire, yeah
I'm unhappy with all the power I possess, yeah girl
'Cause girl your the key cause
(I can't get next to you babe)
(I can't get next to you)
(I can't get next to you babe)
(I can't get next to you)

Let me tell that
I can turn back the hands of time,
You better believe I can, oh I
You see I can take the season's change just by waving my hand, let me say I
I can change anything from old to new girl, oh I
All the things I want to do the most, you see, I'm unable to do, yeah

Unimportant these things that I'm trying to do here today
'Cause girl, you see, I
(Can't get next to you babe)
I've been trying a long time
(I can't get next to you)
Oh somebody oughta help me
(I can't get next to you, babe)
Let me, let me go
(I can't get next to you)
Let me

I, Lord I've been working on it, baby
I've been thinking about it
Oh I
But you see, I've been trying to call you all day long
But you see I don't have your phone number, honey, I
I've been, I've been, thinking about you baby, something awful

You see, I, oh I, sometimes I feel like I want to moan about it
And I, I don't just know what to say about it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Savoy Brown's "I Can't Get Next To You" are centered around the idea of being powerful, yet powerless when it comes to matters of the heart. The song's protagonist boasts about his abilities - from turning gray skies blue to flying like a bird in the sky, he can seemingly do it all. However, there is one thing he cannot do that he desperately wants: to be with his love interest. Despite his impressive powers, he finds himself unable to reach her, and is left feeling helpless and frustrated.

The lyrics of the song are a metaphor for the power dynamics in a relationship, and the frustration that comes with not being able to connect with someone you deeply care for. The singer is so consumed by his desire for his love interest that he feels powerless to do anything else. He recognizes that his powers are ultimately meaningless without her by his side, and so he is left feeling lost and alone.

The repeated chorus of "I can't get next to you" reinforces this sense of helplessness and frustration, as the singer laments his inability to reach the one he loves. Despite all his power and ability, he is still just a mortal man, subject to the whims of his heart.

heard these guys in the 70's and still continue. Love this song. This music ain't for the cookie cutter mass produce liking folks out there. No super bowl gigs for Savoy Brown....they are the real deal.

@mberge1

I consider myself to be in an exclusive club of Savoy Brown fans. Such an awesome group. The more I delve into their music IM FAMILIAR WITH--keep finding there is much more music from them than I was ever aware of. I'm ONE of the Special few! My first introduction was Street Corner Talkin' album. Love this band.

So sorry to read that guitarist Kim Simmonds, who was a great influence on my own guitar playing for over 50 years, has passed away just about 9 days ago on the 13th of this month just almost a week after his 75th birthday which was on the 5th. RIP Kim Simmonds ..5th December 1947 - 13th December 2022...thank you Kim Simmonds for all the great Blues/Blues Rock music ypu provided thru out my life and lead guitar lessons I got listening to you on Savoy Brown records over and over to learn how to play lead guitar in the 60s in my early teens and helped me learn the basics of the pentatonic scales as a young guitarist growing up in the 60s and influenced my own playing snd understanding of the fretboard for
decades affter...RIP Guitar Maestro Kim Simmonds...

@dougbaugh1

This is a great arrangement of this song. Virtually every blues/rock band that covers this song uses Savoy Browns arrangement.

@Wardyaudio

Actually it was Al Green's arrangement

@davidyates4714

Love this song! Savoy Brown was one of the bands that I listened to in my EARLY teens, in smoky basement bedrooms!
