Savoy Brown is a British blues band formed in the 1960s, originally known a… Read Full Bio ↴Savoy Brown is a British blues band formed in the 1960s, originally known as the Saveloy Brown Blues Band. Their 1969 single, Train to Nowhere (with singer Chris Youlden), was viewed by many as the last gasp of the blues scene in Great Britain. Although Savoy Brown never reached much acclaim in their home nation, they developed a loyal core following in the United States. In the 1960s and 1970s, the band managed to penetrate the Billboard Hot 100. Superstardom perpetually evaded them, perhaps in part because of their frequent lineup changes. Indeed, while the band is still active today, only one founding member, Kim Simmonds, has been with the band since the beginning. Guitarist "Lonesome" Dave Peverett, bassist Tony Stevens, and drummer Roger Earl went on to form Foghat. Original member and harmonica player John O'Leary is still active on the British blues circuit with The John O'Leary Band. Savoy Brown's first album, Shake Down, featured lead vocalist Bryce Portius. Portius was one of the first black blues musicians to be a part of a British rock band. Another singer, Dave Walker, would later join Fleetwood Mac and Black Sabbath.

There was such a wide range of styles and sounds back then.. From the formula pop songs on the radio to the "album" bands that "did their own thing". But with imagination and top talent... Id say from mid 1968 to mid 70's were the peak years.. For such wide range of musical styles in all genres

I don't get Pete Frame's dismissal of Savoy Brown as "ordinary". This album is one adventurous track after another. This one is an instrumental which is under five minutes long yet has contours and clever musical changes. The way the strings come in and out is up there with Deep Purple Mk.1's work in the field.

He was opinionated a bit….tended towards the Pretty Things/Stones/Mott the Hoople direction of music being more relevant.
I don’t agree with his assessment of the track either but his book is terrific….

Yuck yuck yuck sorry to say I love the 70 I had 45 when I was 9 years old my first song I ever heard was Still Waters by The Four Tops and Compton and then by the time I was 13 and 14 I was already listening to Stevie Wonder when he came out with my shity and more on the 45 and then it was Smokey Robinson and the Miracles until Smokey Robinson drop the Miracles and the first song was Baby Baby don't cry here I go again and if anybody doesn't know this junior Walker & the All-Stars made the first what does it take lot of people don't know that so I'm letting you know that it was I could tell you anything you could quiz me on anything I've been listening to music and I've had 45 then albums and a turntable with the diamond needle and big speakers and an equalizer and lot of people at our younger age don't even know what an equalizer is but that's how we blew our music out of the park and it was so awesome and they're coming back to vinyl just to let you know so I know a lot about music I could be a subscriber I really can I can send you a song from 47 years ago and I'll know every lyric I don't know how it is but that's just the way that my brain works I even blow my own mind it's like and I'm 62 but I tell you I seen everybody I got to see the real concerts the real people the real musicians will never be concerts like we have concerts and we had concerts you didn't have no seating arrangements you got to bring in your booze as long as your food and your blanket but now they rip you off because because they want to rip you off for a bottle of water to pay $4 and you're going to think you're going to get buzzed on a $6 beer or an $8 beer and a 6 or $7 hotdog these are people that I called flockers their flocking and your flocking to see a concert that you're going to see on a screen and it's going to be way in the hell out there unless you're going to put yourself away in the front and if you're going to bring your family and pay $20 for parking which we paid a dollar fifty to park and we didn't have seating and this was at the Oakland Coliseum a day on the green 1977 when Santana first did that and that's not the only time I seen Santana I got to see him when I was 21 he only had been out a year and a half and I got to see him at San Francisco and a venue and he wasn't big yet so he was right in front of our face when we were having eating and having drinks and that'll never happen again ever he got so big that he started playing in Hattiesburg Oakland Coliseum the Cow Palace the Sacramento Arena and you guys called these concerts when you're seeing them on a TV screen back then you got to move around there was seats and you got to go down on the grass if you wanted to move around it was a blast now you're confined to your seat where you have to dance around like that that's a joke but if you guys keep flocking they're going to keep raising the prices it's like when you're in the Union if you can't delegate then you're never going to make any money I know because I work the California Cedar Products and when I was working there in 1983 I was making $7.70 an hour and I would never lie and we were going to delegating 1986 and so the union gave us $11.47 that was hella money back then and people are making $12 an hour give me a break but if you keep blocking to these fucking concerts that you can't see shit the course they're going to raise them because it's stupid if you would just stop the prices would come down just like a NFL game people are flockers they want to see that but you're still seen it way up there you might as well see it on a video game just cuz you want to be there with the noise if you guys would stop blocking the tickets would come down cheap they pay the NFL people way too much money but it's coming out of your pocket so keep on flocking and keep on Payne God bless and I know you know the rest I just happened to be born in the greatest are ever that's what happened and a 1976 yes it was just like Saturday Night Fever the lights on the floors and mirrors on the wall they didn't patch you down everybody was mellow it was hella cool but now all these other fucked up people that are raise the prices now if you got to stop you stop just like Christmas Christmas is a nothing but a fucking national holiday for the stores and people run to go get presents for what because they tell you to go get presents and it's Christmas and then you got to go exchange the shit you don't even like that's not Christmas Christmas is for children only not for adults adults don't give adults presents but the children should still believe in Santa Claus and I believe in that but as for the rest it's all for the stars for the stars to make money I haven't had a Christmas tree for 22 years because I am cleaning up the needle mess and I'm buying ornaments and all that other crap that you have to put away every year just because they tell you it was Christmas day and God didn't die on the even rent an apartment on $12 an hour unless you live with a friend or relative but back in the day it wasn't like that hamburger was $0.29 a pound can you believe that and I was 14 and I already had my first kid but I made it and my house is already paid off for you might live on the south side but money can't buy you love and if you want to live in an expensive place then you're going to have to live paycheck-to-paycheck from food to food and you'll never ever get nowhere I have a roof over my head I have a heater I might live on South side but I've learned to paint my house I've learned to put in my own rugs I learned to put in my own blinds I don't depend on anybody to come and do anything for me because I learn it and it's about brains if you got brains you can do it you can do anything you put your brain to do it that's the god honest truth and I don't use God in vain♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
