Poor Girl
Savoy Brown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is a story 'bout a poor girl, a story that you ought to know
She lived all alone in a one room flat on a street where the lights are low
Every night about the same time she'd go and put her glad rags on
Go to the place where everyone goes to Boogaloo all night long

She's a poor girl
Born and raised in the country she got tired of pushing a plow
She take my train to the city and mother you should look at her now
With her rattlesnake boots, elephant bag, genuine crocodile hat
Around her neck to top it off she even wears a persian cat

She's a poor girl
That was the story of the poor girl but now she uses her head
She's back home working on the land instead of playing in bed
The fast life she was living took her as it's prey
Now she's back in the country getting fatter every day

She's a Poor Girl

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Savoy Brown's song "Poor Girl" tell the story of a young woman who left her rural hometown to pursue a different kind of life in the city. She lived alone in a small apartment on a dimly lit street and every night she would dress up in her best clothes and go out to dance all night long at Boogaloo. The narrative paints her as a woman who has come a long way from her humble beginnings, and takes great pride in her appearance with her fancy clothing and accessories, which include her rattlesnake boots, elephant bag, and even a Persian cat around her neck.

Despite her outward success, the lyrics suggest that the woman is unhappy with her life in the city, and that she has been using the party scene as a way to cope with her feelings of loneliness and isolation. The final verse of the song reveals that the woman has since returned to her hometown, and has traded in her city life to work on the land once more. The song suggests that the woman has come to realize that the fast-paced, party-driven lifestyle of the city is not for her, and that the satisfaction she finds in life now is in the simplicity and tranquility of her rural roots.

Overall, the song is a poignant and layered meditation on the themes of isolation, self-discovery, and the search for contentment, told through the lens of the titular "Poor Girl." It is a testament to the emotional depth and complexity of Savoy Brown's music, and a reminder of the power of storytelling in music.

RIP Kim Simmonds
Truly, one of the greatest guitar players over the last 50 years.

@garyluedke2603

I had just watched a live show with Kim and Savoy Brown. during the breaks i came up to the stage in this Chicago suburb club and asked Kim about his amps and guitars and stuff and mentioned i'm in a small local band. Kim was very humble and supportive and we talked about music. At closing time, i got a T-shirt and got Kim to sign the back. I said too bad its closing time i really liked the music. So to my surprise Kim says "it ain't closin time for me how about we go have a pint"?? I was amazed. So we head back to the bar and had a few beers and talked blues and guitars and music for some time. I am truly blessed to have had that experience with a LEGEND like Kim. I hope you read this Kim... it was a evening i will always remember! THANKS KIM!!

At 75, Kim and any version of Savoy Brown go straight to the roots of my heart and memory. Loved his shows and always hoped to see him again and thought it might happen in the Spring of 2023. Then came December of 2022. Still hard to accept his loss. RIP, sir. This is a great video. Thank you.

@loveybells77

Love this band. They were really never recoginzed for there talent. You guys rock

@777jinxie

I've followed them since the late 60's, 70's, 80's...days of Chris Youldon. Have met Kim Simmonds 3 times and have one of his picks. This band rocks like earlier times and is really tight! One of the best guitarists ever.

@Lorennickloff

Met Kim and was fortunate to see him play many times since the 60's. He only got better with age.
We Love You Kim ! πŸ™ R.I.P. πŸ™

I'm lucky I have the live CD of this gig and this band. Found it by accident at a local used record shop here in Nashville. The disc was even signed by Kim! I listen to itΒ just about every day. Unbelieveable jams. Got all the classic tunes too. Kim is the MAN. This was one of Kim's best groups. So tight. These guys just jell on every tune.

@universe1831

Which is the name of the Jam? Which date?

@roadrocket7

@Universe The name of the live CD is "You Should Have Been There", on Panache Records/CD #1251. The version you are hearing on this clip is slightly different than the version on the CD. This CD is from the same tour, I'm sure. Same guys in the band. I've seen this CD for sale on Ebay, so good luck in your search. The whole CD is recorded so good and it's well-balanced in that your hear ALL the guys in the band, especially Kim.
