The Dirt Road
Sawyer Brown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Daddy worked hard for his dollar
He said some folks don't-but that's okay
They won't know which road to follow
Because an easy street might lead you astray

[Chorus]
I'll take the dirt road-it's all I know
I've been walking it for years
Its gone where I need to go
Oh it ain't easy-it ain't supposed to be
So I'll take my time
And life won't pass me by
'Cause it's right there to find, On the dirt road

I have lived life in the fast lane
You gotta watch your back and look both ways
When I said and done the time we have is borrowed
You better make real sure you're headed the right way

[Chorus x2]

Overall Meaning

Sawyer Brown's song The Dirt Road is a reflective piece that encourages listeners to take a closer look at the paths they're currently on in life, while also giving them the courage to take a different, more challenging route if necessary. The first verse sets the tone and tells the story of the singer's father, who worked hard to earn his income and instilled the value of hard work and dedication in his offspring. He warns that an easy road is not always the right choice and may lead to unintended consequences or missed opportunities. In this way, the song reminds us to carve our own way, to blaze our own trail, and that a path less traveled has its own rewards.

The chorus of the song reiterates this message, continuing to emphasize that going down the dirt road, despite the challenges, is ultimately the right choice. By walking down the road that's less taken, we end up finding what we're looking for, we accomplish our goals—and we have the added benefit of experiencing life and the world around us. This is in stark contrast to living life in the fast lane, as the second verse points out, which implies that we sometimes rush through life too quickly and fail to take the time to appreciate what we truly have or to assess if the path we're on is the right one.

Overall, The Dirt Road is a song about the importance of taking control of one's life and following an instinct we often overlook: taking the road that is not the obvious or easy one. Sawyer Brown is encouraging us to find our own unique significance in the world while we still have the time and the chance to do so.

The best country band ever. So underrated. My uncle seen them in concert and said it was the best performance he's ever seen, and he has seen the Stones and other big rock bands.
