This is one of two songs on Oxymoron that Chicago-based production duo Nez & Rio supplied the beat for. They previously contributed production for a couple of tracks on Schoolboy Q's 2012 album Habits & Contradictions.
Speaking about the song at a February 2014 listening session for Oxymoron, Q said: "When I first made ['Gangsta'] all I wanted to say was that my grandma showed me my first strap. That's all I wanted to put in the song. I just thought that was so gangsta. It was kind of weird, too, now that I really think about it. She used to take her bullets out of the gun and leave the clip in her room and let me play with her gun. I was an only child so I probably got on her nerves that much that she finally gave me her burner, like, 'Here, get the f--k out my face.' [Laughs] I just wanted to say that so bad."
Q's label boss Anthony Tiffith told Billboard magazine about his reaction to hearing the rapper's story: "ScHoolboy is gangsta. When he first told me that story, I was like, 'Your grandmother gave you your first gun? Really? I'm scared of your grandma - I'm going to make sure your contract isโฏright!'โฏ"

Knock, knock-knock, knock-knock, yak (gangsta shit, gangsta shit)
The lyrics to ScHoolboy Q's "Gangsta" portray a story of a young man who has made it from rags to riches through illicit means. He starts by affirming that he is indeed a gangsta- a product of his father's lifestyle, rejecting the path of a rapper. The chorus of the song is repetitive, signifying Q's unapologetic approach to his past, where weed, Gs (guns), and grooves (music) were his pillars.
Q gives an account of his life before fame, where he had to hustle his way through life until he could afford a gun (9). With this gun, he involved himself in a robbery (lick) that led him to acquire yola (cocaine). This move proved profitable as he got a woman out of it. Her pimp had pneumonia, but she continued to work, highlighting the desperation of the poor.
On the other hand, Q portrays the success that comes with such illegal activities, where he flaunts his fame and fortune, with lots of alcohol, Backwoods (cigars), and Perrier Jouet Rosรฉ (champagne) in his company, as his grandma introduced him to guns. His friends also had connections, which got Q among the 'real niggas' who are fearless and have more than one gun. The song ends on a fatal note, as the violent lifestyle the chorus idealizes ends up killing the very people Q wants to connect with.
