Joy
Scanners Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Yeah my love leaves a permanent stain
I'm in love with my digital toy
My joy machine always there to enjoy
JOY
The opening lines of Scanners's "Joy" may suggest a bleak and downtrodden image of a "bum", but this is immediately contradicted by the line "my love leaves a permanent stain". This introduces the central theme of the song; the joy and pleasure derived from something that society might deem unconventional or unacceptable. The line "I'm in love with my digital toy" establishes this as a love song dedicated not to a person, but to an inanimate object - a "joy machine".
This machine, we soon learn, is "always there to enjoy". The relentless beat and driving synths of the arrangement amplify this sense of joy and pleasure, lending it a pulsing, physical quality. The chorus repeats this central idea, "JOY" becoming a mantra that is both an affirmation of the singer's experience, and an invitation for the listener to share in it. All in all, "Joy" is a celebration of finding pleasure in unexpected places, and an argument in favor of seeking out happiness and joy wherever we can find it.
