Last Goodbye
Scarlett Johansson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die
But it's over
Just hear this and then I'll go
You gave me more to live for
More than you'll ever know

This is our last embrace
Must I dream and always see your face
Why can't we overcome this wall
Well, maybe it's just because I didn't know you at all

Kiss me, please kiss me
But kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation
You know it makes me so angry 'cause I know that in time
I'll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye

Did you say "no, this can't happen to me,"
And did you rush to the phone to call
Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind
Saying maybe you didn't know him at all
You didn't know him at all, oh, you didn't know

Well, the bells out in the church tower chime
Burning clues into this heart of mine

Thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memories
Offer signs that it's over...it's over

Overall Meaning

The song "Last Goodbye" by Scarlett Johansson is a poignant anthem of finality, a ballad that captures the emotional intensity of letting go. As Johansson sings about the end of a relationship, the lyrics reflect the bittersweet nature of endings and how hard it can be to say goodbye. The song starts with "This is our last goodbye, I hate to feel the love between us die, but it's over." The opening line sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics. It's a sad goodbye, but one that's necessary to move on.

In the second verse, Johansson sings, "This is our last embrace, must I dream and always see your face, why can't we overcome this wall, well, maybe it's just because I didn't know you at all." Here, she touches on the confusion and frustration that often arises at the end of a relationship. It's hard to understand why things didn't work out, even if you knew each other so well. She then pleads with her partner to kiss her, but not out of consolation, out of desire. She also reminds them that in time, she'll only make them cry.

The final verse is perhaps the most powerful, as the bells out in the church tower chime and offer signs that it's over. Johansson questions whether her partner ever really knew her at all, and notes that this is the end. The song ends on a somber note, as the memories of what once was linger in the air.

Overall, "Last Goodbye" is a song that captures the pain, confusion, and sorrow that comes with letting go. It's a reminder that even though it's hard to say goodbye, it's sometimes necessary for growth and healing to take place.

as if she couldn't be any more perfect, she can also sing omfg

@RiikkaL

I honestly love the tone of her voice and her singing style. It's very plain, very dark and subtle and therefore intimate and touching. I adore her cover album of Tom Waits' songs. She interprets songs without any snobbism or sentimentality. I also love Tom Waits' and Jeff Buckley's original songs, of course, and I do not compare Scarlett's versions with them because she's not trying to better anyone. She's just bringing a different perspective to the songs with her own lo-fi style.

@wakoloco1243

she sounds so perfect. There's something about her voice that makes this cover interesting. it's different

@reb2229

YOU COMMENTED ON LIKE EVERY SINGLE VIDEO THE CREW SANG ON. YES WE GET IT. THEY DO (need a musical). BUT WOULD JOSS REALLY WRITE ONE? It took him 6 months to write everything for 1 episode of Buffy. That's nothing compared to a movie.

@somyee1466

I love her voice !!!

@shaniasampson7921

she has a kind of Nora Jones flare in her singing

@zimonslot
