One of Scarling.'s many definitions is the smallest mark left on your heart - yet after hearing Scarling. the band, you'll agree their sound is anything but small. With the release of 2004's critically acclaimed "Sweet Heart Dealer" (Produced by Chris Vrenna), an album that ultimately led them to a Short List Award Nomination, Scarling. has been capturing the hearts of their steadily growing cult fanbase, with their knack of redefining noise and chaos within the context of pop songs and expanding the ventricles of gloomsters and fey indie rockers alike. In 2004, Robert Smith handpicked Scarling. as one of the seven acts to tour with his Curiosa Festival, along with Interpol and Mogwai. When asked about how she felt being able to play with one of her long time favorites, Jessicka simply replied: "The Cure has always been one of the only bands I found worthy of surrendering everything in exchange for nothing. They have yet to break my heart."
Although The Cure's influence is evident, it's the collision of their collective diverse influences as well as the ability to properly utilize feedback and noise that gives Scarling. their signature sound. A sound created roughly six years ago in Los Angeles, when noise theorist Christian Hejnal and surname-free singer Jessicka bonded over an unbridled hatred of the legion of clinging parasites and soulless zombies choking the life out of music. After a series of 7" singles on Sympathy, Scarling. announced in early 2005 that their second album "So Long, Scarecrow" would appear later that year; it was preceded by the single "We Are the Music Makers", and was released on October 23, 2005.
The critical reception for Scarecrow was generally strong: Alternative Press gave the album a [5/5] rating and described Hejnal as a "guitar physicist who holds court over these atmospheric rockers’ second album, approximating everything from space-station climates to sperm whales rollin’ on E, all the while delivering solid songs."
The Independent noted “Scarling. work up a wonderfully hazy guitar swirl, reminiscent of post-My Bloody Valentine noise-pop from the Britain of the early nineties.”
And Bust (magazine) described the album as "the musical equivalent of an Edward Gorey illustration: ominous and shadowy, but not without a certain sense of morbid joy. Sly lyrics and sarcastic insights pepper Scarecrow’s dystopian soundscape."
SLS's first single "City Noise/Staring To The Sun" was released on 6-6-06 and is featured on the compilation "Alright, This Time Just the Girls Vol. 2" and in the documentary The Treasures Of Long Gone John. Scarling.'s music has been featured on Showtime's The L Word television series, and an episode of the medical drama Grey's Anatomy is entitled Band Aid Covers The Bullet Hole. In 2006 Scarling. continue to tour in the US and Europe and are expected to begin working on their third full length album in 2008.
On February 2, 2021, Jessicka announced on Twitter that she was no longer a part of the music industry, stating that she was now "finding other ways to release my negative emotions while trying to be kinder to myself."

Dodging army coat
He never thought that I'd sink or float
I'd be dismissed
By fear or fist
Which made me angry
Like a classmate
My name on his desk
Coz he's on my chest
He said I'm wrong
Now move along
Rejected – angry
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Nothing like love, sex
Everything, its all or nothing
Oh, I would kill anyone for you
Like a liar
Oh what have you done?
No happy ending
Kitten with the gun
Fought tooth and nail
To no avail
Frustrated - angry
Like a sister,
Never good enough,
So I was weird
Over fed and deaf
With wounded words
It sounds absurd
That left me angry
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Nothing like love sex
Everything, its all or nothing
Oh, I would kill anyone for you.
Love drug, I'm not in love,
It's all, all, all sex, apathy,
Oh, I would kill anyone for you.
You're like a killer
In the dead of night
You rip me open
And I will not fight
For on this day
I will just lay
Quiet, not angry
Quiet, not angry.
The Scarling. song "Like a Killer" is a powerful and introspective piece about the emotional scars left by parental neglect, bullying, and self-doubt. The lyrics are filled with metaphors that convey the singer's rage and despair, but also her resilience and determination. The first verse alludes to the singer's father, who was distant and dismissive, never supportive of her dreams or fears. The army coat he wore is a symbol of his authority and his emotional armor, which the singer resents and imitates. She feels like a soldier in a battle she can't win, either by running away or fighting back. The reference to a classmate who wrote her name on his desk is a poignant reminder of childhood innocence, but also of cruelty and isolation. The singer identifies with him because he acknowledges her existence, even if it's in a hostile way. She likes the connection, the feeling of being seen, but also the anger that comes with it. The chorus of the song expresses the intensity of the singer's feelings, the all-consuming desire for love and validation that she would do anything to get, even if it means hurting or killing someone. The use of "love sex" as a compound noun underscores the confusion and desperation of the singer's emotions. She wants both, but can't have either, and so she resorts to violence as a means of control.
The second verse of the song continues the theme of rejection and shame, but this time focuses on the singer's own shortcomings. She feels like a liar because she can't live up to her own expectations or society's standards. She sees herself as a "kitten with a gun," a harmless creature with a dangerous weapon, meaningless gestures with lethal consequences. She fights tooth and nail to be accepted, but it's all in vain. The reference to a sister who was "never good enough" is a hint at the singer's own family dynamics, but also at the wider society that judges women by their appearance and behavior. The singer rebels against this pressure by becoming "weird," which is both a defense mechanism and a statement of identity. She is overfed and deaf to criticism, because she needs to survive on her own terms. The final verse of the song brings a twist to the narrative, as the singer addresses her tormentor, who is also her lover. The killer in the dead of night is a metaphor for the singer's own aggression, but also for her lover's power over her. She no longer fights back, but lets herself be consumed by his passion, laying still and quiet. This could be interpreted as a sign of surrender, or of submission, but also of revenge. The singer is no longer angry, but she is not at peace either.
