Alright
Schaeffer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

4 a.m. driving. New Mexico, we're arriving.
Second day straight of driving.
Rumble strips waking. A tired "Are you o.k.?"
7 o'clock philosophy makes things seem okay
But I'm alright if you're alright
These last hundred miles have just been bringing me down
But if you turn up the radio and roll down the windows so we can scream at the top of our lungs
I see love as fading, but you say it is waiting somewhere out there…at least you swear
L.A. was so crazy. The cell phone charge is draining. Get home fast, 'cause they're all waiting.
Cause I'm alright if you're alright
These last hundred miles have just been bringing me down
But if you turn up the radio and roll down the windows so we can scream at the top of our lungs
Oh home is just around the bend.

Oh, home is just around the bend.
So I'm alright

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Schaeffer's song "Alright" describe a car journey during which the singer is worn out and feeling low. The journey has been going on for two days straight and the rumble strips on the side of the road keep jerking him back to consciousness. The singer seems to be struggling with some dark thoughts, but is reassured by his companion who seems to be more optimistic. The singer says "7 o'clock philosophy makes things seem okay", which could mean that the darkness he is experiencing is just a result of being overtired.

The chorus, "But I'm alright if you're alright", is an expression of support and solidarity with his companion. Although the journey is tough, knowing that his companion is doing okay makes it easier for him. The singer is able to take some solace in the fact that they will soon be home, which is just around the bend. The song is ultimately a reminder that even when things are tough, having someone to share the journey with can make all the difference.
