Schandmaul was founded in the summer of 1998, when six musicians from Munich and the surrounding area decided to put on a concert of folksongs. Because just doing covers was not enough, they decided to write some of their own stuff. Thus was created the first tune they wrote themselves, "Teufelsweib" (Devil Woman), which already had what was to become the typical Schandmaul sound that they've built on over the years.
Der letzte Tanz
Schandmaul Lyrics

Fanfaren und Trompeten,
Am Hof das Fest des Frühlings.
Im Winde die Fahnen wehten.
Nebst Speis und Trank und viel Gesang
Zur Freud' der Menschen all,
Ein Turnier im Lanzenstoß,
Wer als letzer auf dem Rosse -
Derweil die anderen liegen -
Darf mit des Königs liebster Tochter
Beim Tanz die Glieder biegen.
So kamen sie von nah und fern
Und stürzten ins Gefecht,
Denn für diese tolle Frau
Waren so manche Schmerzen recht.
Als ich ein junger Edelmann
Schon fast als Sieger wähnte,
Sah er den schwarzen Ritter an,
Wie er am schwarzen Pferde lehnte.
"Willst du kämpfen oder warten!?"
Schrie der Edelsmann
Und ehe er es sich versah
Spürte er wie man fliegen kann.
Der letzte Tanz!
Sie ist so zart wie die Rose.
Der letzte Tanz!
Es berührt sie sacht der Zeitlose.
So war es denn geschehen,
Der schwarze Ritter war der Sieger.
"So will ich den Preis mir holen."
Sagte er und kniete sich nieder.
Schwarze Wolken zogen auf,
Als die Musik zum Tanze rief.
Das Volk blieb nurmehr angstvoll stehen,
Als es gewahrte, was dort lief!
Der letzte Tanz!
Sie ist so zart wie die Rose.
Der letzte Tanz!
Es berührt sie sacht der Zeitlose.
The lyrics to Schandmaul's "Der letzte Tanz" are about a spring festival held at the court, where a tournament in jousting is held for the pleasure of the people. The prize for the tournament is to dance with the king's beloved daughter, and many young men have come from near and far to compete for her hand. The festival is filled with food, drink, and music as the competitors engage in the tournament. The singer, a young nobleman, believes himself close to victory when he sees the mysterious black knight, who tells him to either fight or wait. Before he can make a move, he is knocked off his horse and defeated by the black knight, who wins the right to dance with the princess.
The song is about the fleeting nature of life and love, and how even the greatest victories must eventually come to an end. The princess is likened to a delicate rose, and the dance to a moment of precious beauty that must eventually fade away. The black knight, with his imposing presence and mysterious nature, represents the inevitability of death and the passing of time. The festival and the moment of triumph are all transitory, but the beauty of the moment lives on in memory.
