The core members were Josh Clayton-Felt and Michael Ward who would play club dates in Los Angeles, California as a duo accompanied by programmed drums and bass. The band signed with Capitol Records in 1990, and released their first single on that same year on 7-inch vinyl. Their self-titled debut, School of Fish, was released in March 1991, followed by their first single, Three Strange Days. Also during the same year, they appeared on a KROQ concert disc called the Acoustic Christmas. Their second album, Human Cannonball, was released in 1993. The album did not sell very well and was not as successful as the self-titled album. Shortly thereafter, the band broke up.
Singer Josh Clayton-Felt died on January 19, 2000 at 32 of testicular cancer. In the six years after School of Fish, he had released solo albums entitled Inarticulate Nature Boy (1995), Felt Like Making a Live Record (1996), Beautiful Nowhere (1999), Spirit Touches Ground (2002), and Center of Six (2003).
Guitarist Michael Ward went on to play with John Hiatt and eventually became a member of The Wallflowers. Chad Fischer went on to form the band Lazlo Bane, most known for original opening credits of the TV show Scrubs. He also performed music in the Garden State movie soundtrack. Christopher MacDonald, who played bass with the band on tour, but did not play on any School of Fish recordings, records synthesizer space music under the name Telomere (label Evenfall).

Simplified, don't even try
You know you don't belong
Read my mind you know that I guess I have it all
Hold me down where I can watch the water fall
[Chorus:]
Are you complicator
Well I'm just not how all over
Are you complicator
[Chorus]
Well I'm just not how all over
Are you complicator
Complicator, Complicator

Complicator
The lyrics of School of Fish's song "Complicator" seem to deal with the frustration of being pigeonholed, feel a need to break free of the limitations imposed by society, and a fascination with the complexity of human beings. The opening line "I don't want to be in a box until I'm gone" expresses a desire to break free of labels and expectations, to be free to live and explore without being defined by others. The singer rejects simplicity, implying that it's a limitation of creativity and self-expression. He expresses an understanding that he is different from the norm, and while he may be trying to have it all, he is not willing to be held down or conform to what others deem appropriate for him.
The repeated lines "Are you complicator" demonstrates the singer's frustration with the lack of depth in society, wanting a person who can understand and appreciate the complexity and intricacies that make up human beings. The song seems to speak to the inner turmoil and feelings of inadequacy in a society that values simplicity and conformity. The final line, "Complicator" is repeated multiple times, seeming to emphasize the desire to break free from these norms and be embraced and celebrated for the complexity and uniqueness that defines us all.
