Zombie
Schuyler Fisk Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Zombie, zombie the dead are walking
You can't love me because your heart don't beat
And I can't trust you for anything
So you can't keep your hands away from me
Zombie, zombie
Zombie, zombie, zombie, zombie
Zombie, zombie, zombie, zombie
Zombie, zombie the dead are walking
Go ahead line up outside my house
You can't wait right there until I come out
Cause I won't let you in the place I live
You're a zombie
You're a zombie
Zombie, zombie, zombie, zombie
Zombie, zombie the dead are walking
Zombie, zombie, zombie, zombie
Zombie, zombie the dead are walking
Put your hands up
Put your hands up
Put your hands up
Put your hands up
We can only save ourselves
We can only save ourselves
You're a zombie, zombie, zombie, zombie
Zombie, zombie the dead are walking
Zombie, zombie, zombie, zombie
Zombie, zombie the dead are walking
Put your hands up
Put your hands up
In Schuyler Fisk's song "Zombie," she uses the metaphor of a zombie to describe a love interest who is emotionally dead and unable to reciprocate her feelings. The repeated lyrics of "zombie, zombie, zombie" provide a haunting and melancholic tone, emphasizing the idea that the love interest is lifeless and without emotion. The line "you can't love me because your heart don't beat" illustrates how the love interest is unable to feel love due to their emotional numbness.
Fisk also expresses her distrust of this love interest, stating "I can't trust you for anything" and "you can't keep your hands away from me." The repeated phrase "you're a zombie" reinforces the idea that this love interest is not fully present in the relationship and cannot provide the emotional connection Fisk desires.
However, Fisk also recognizes that she has the power to protect herself from this emotionally dead partner. She sings "put your hands up" repeatedly, which can be interpreted as a command to the love interest to back off or an encouragement for herself to stand up to the love interest. The line "we can only save ourselves" suggests that Fisk recognizes that she is the only one who can protect her own emotional well-being.
Overall, "Zombie" is a haunting portrayal of a one-sided and emotionally unfulfilling relationship that leaves Fisk feeling vulnerable and disconnected from her partner.
