Scooch won a contest on the BBC Saturday Morning show Live & Kicking in 1999. They competed against a boyband to have their single released. Even though the bands were already formed, this contest was unique as it pre-dated the format of the first music talent reality show, ITV's Popstars in 2000, where the band Hear’Say was created from the show.
During the height of their short-lived popularity, Scooch supported 5ive and B*Witched on their arena tours, as well as appearing on many popular music and children's programmes at the time. They also toured around many primary schools in order to gain a fan base... a strange aproach, that did not really work!
In September 2000, EMI-Parlophone terminated their contract after four top 30 hits in the UK singles chart. The group decided against seeking renewal elsewhere. They got back together in January 2004 to perform at the London nightclub G-A-Y's Gone But Not Forgotten night. The success of this prompted the band to do a tour of several gay venues and events around the country.
The Groups Single Chart Record:
"When My Baby" - UK Singles Chart Peak Position #29, October 1999
"More Than I Needed To Know" - UK Singles Chart Peak Position #5, Japan Singles Chart Peak Position #1, January 2000
"The Best Is Yet To Come" - UK Singles Chart Peak Position #12, April 2000
"For Sure" - UK Singles Chart Peak Position #15, July 2000
The Groups most successful song 'More than I Needed To Know' became so popular in Japan it was featured on a video game over there called 'DDRMAX2: Dance Dance Revolution 7thMIX.'
In 2006, Russ appeared in the Channel 4 and E4 TV show Boys Will Be Girls, where three ex-popstar men formed a new girl band and attempted to pass as women.
On 28 February 2007, the BBC announced that Scooch have reformed to perform one of the entries in the fourth Making Your Mind Up programme. This was broadcast on BBC One on 17 March 2007. Scooch's song, Flying The Flag (For You) is a cheeky pop song about flying, with the band playing the roles of airline cabin crew, much like Sestre did for Slovenia in Eurovision 2002.
Scooch competed against Brian Harvey, Liz McClarnon, Hawkins & Brown, Big Brovaz and newcomer Cyndi. They won and represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest final on Saturday 12 May 2007 in the Finnish capital, Helsinki. Unfortunately, on the night, they came last but one which sparked major controversy in the UK as to how such a popular song wasn't voted for across Europe.
Scooch's CD's from the past have became hugely popular . Their Album 'Four Sure' is selling for over £20 on internet bidding website eBay
More Than I Needed to Know
Scooch Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
So just be honest and straight from the start,
And it's so plain to me although the world may not see,
Your smile's a disguise for The truth that's written in your heart.
Every now and then I catch a glimpse of confusion within,
And what I can't believe, you think that I'm so naive,
To fall for that innocent look upon your face and...
You don't let your feelings show,
But your eyes told me more than I needed to know.
Take those lies and let them go,
'Cause your eyes told me more than I needed to know.
I know that look so well and I can't wait for the story you'll tell.
With a hint of a grin you'll just deny it again,
Oh when will you learn you can't fool a fool like me and...
You don't let your feelings show,
But your eyes told me more than I needed to know.
Take those lies and let them go,
'Cause your eyes told me more than I needed to know.
Surely you'll see your not fooling me,
The secrets out there ain't no doubt
And what I can't believe, you think that I'm so naive,
To fall for that innocent look upon your face and...
You don't let your feelings show,
But your eyes told me more than I needed to know.
Take those lies and let them go,
'Cause your eyes told me more than I needed to know.
In Scooch's song More Than I Needed to Know, the lyrics depict a situation in which the singer is convinced that the person they're addressing is hiding something, despite their exterior of cool composure. The singer implores the person to be honest with them, as they can tell that there is something deeper going on beneath the surface. The phrase “your smile's a disguise for the truth that's written in your heart” implies that the person is purposely concealing their true feelings, perhaps out of fear or a desire to maintain appearances. The lines “but your eyes told me more than I needed to know” highlight the general theme of the song - that actions speak louder than words.
The phrase “I know that look so well and I can't wait for the story you'll tell” shows that the singer has been in this situation before and recognizes the familiar signs of deception. They also express a sense of frustration that the person they're addressing can't see that they're not fooling anyone, indicating that this may be a recurring pattern. The repetition of the phrase “take those lies and let them go” emphasizes that the singer just wants the truth, even if it's painful or uncomfortable.
Overall, the song is conveying a message of honesty, authenticity, and transparency. It suggests that it's better to confront difficult emotions head-on rather than trying to suppress them, and that ultimately, the truth will always come to light. The catchy melody and upbeat tempo contradict the serious message of the lyrics, making it a song with both dance potential and emotional depth.

most of Scooch's stuff sounded like reject Steps album tracks, but this was actually one hell of a pop song. Natalie Powers has an incredible voice too, she pretty much carried the entire band

'For Sure' was a great track too, although it was originally meant for Kerri-Ann until she got dropped from her label.
