How Much Is The Fish?
Scooter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The chase is better the the catch

Transforming the tunes
We need your support
If you've got the breath back
It's the first page of the second chapter

I want you back for the rhythm-attack
Coming down on the floor like a maniac
I want you back for the rhythm-attack
Get down in full effect

I want you back for the rhythm-attack
Coming down on the floor like a maniac
I want you back so clean up the dish
By the way, how much is the fish?

How much is the fish?
Here we go, here we go
Here we go again, yeah
Sunshine in the air

We're breaking the rules
Ignore the machine
You won't ever stop this
The chase is better than the catch

I want you back for the rhythm-attack
Coming down on the floor like a maniac
I want you back for the rhythm-attack
Get down in full effect

I want you back for the rhythm-attack
Coming down on the floor like a maniac
I want you back so clean up the dish
By the way, how much is the fish?

How much is the fish?
Yeah
Sunshine in the air

Come
Na na na
Everybody
Na na na
Come on
Na na na
Together

Na na na
(Yeah)
Na na na
(Yeah)
Na na na

How much is the fish?
How much is the fish?
Yeah

Come on, come on
Resurrection

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Scooter's song "How Much Is The Fish" are about the adrenaline rush of chasing something or someone, comparing it to a hunt or a pursuit. The phrase "the chase is better than the catch" is a popular saying that reinforces this idea. The song encourages the listener to dance and move to the rhythm-attack, which is portrayed as a forceful and addictive beat that drives people insane on the dancefloor. The lines "transforming the tunes/we need your support/if you've got the breath back/it's the first page of the second chapter" suggest that this is just the beginning of a new phase for the artists and that they are counting on their fans to follow them in their musical journey.

The chorus repeats the question "how much is the fish?", which has puzzled some listeners over the years. Some have tried to find a deeper meaning to it, such as a critique of consumerism or a metaphor for drug use. However, others have pointed out that the phrase was actually inspired by a real-life incident. In an interview, H.P. Baxxter, the lead singer of Scooter, explained that he once saw a man selling a fish on the street while he was stuck in traffic. Baxxter jokingly asked his bandmate Rick J. Jordan how much the fish cost, and Jordan replied "how much is the fish?" as a way to mock the situation. They found the phrase funny and decided to use it in a song, without intending it to have any symbolic meaning.

Overall, "How Much Is The Fish" is a high-energy techno song that encourages the listener to let loose and dance with abandon. It plays with simple but catchy phrases and repetitive beats that create a hypnotic effect. The song's lyrics may not offer much depth or complexity, but they capture a moment of frenzied joy that many people can relate to.

This is without a doubt one of the best tunes from Scooter ever.

@ErwanLegrand

This is such a good tune it has been covered many times during the last century! It is a cover of "Ev Chistr 'ta Laou"/"Son a Chistr", a tune from Brittany. It was written in 1929 by two teenage brothers and was originally titled "Yao jistr'ta laou ".
