He emerged in the 1970s and at the time he was considered to be one of the few musicians of real talent who carried the tradition of the classic jazz tenor saxophone in the style of Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins as well as Zoot Sims and Don Byas forward. He began playing in various rhythm & blues outfits in Providence (Rhode Island), but subsequently shifted to jazz and the tenor saxophone. In 1976 he moved to New York City at, in part the recommendation of Roy Eldridge. He there joined Benny Goodman for a period of time. During this time, he also developed an alcohol problem.,[1] In the early 1980's he had formed his own quintet and toured all over the world. By then free from his drinking habit, in 1982 he had matured sufficiently to be able to break away from the spell of mainly Ben Webster and Zoot Sims, of whom he had been criticized of imitating. From this point on both his playing and his tone was very much his own.
Living in New York City, he toured all around the world during the 1980's, playing Japan and all over Europe. He was in particular a recurrent visitor to the UK, Sweden and the Grand Parade du Jazz, held in Nice, France. By the early 1990's he was ready for a next step and by 1994 when he released Organic Duke, he had developed a quite singular style: a large, well rounded but still focused tone and improvising, ostensibly still based on the swing idiom (especially Ellington), but incorporating more modern elements. During this period, he relocated to London, and formed his current quartet, featuring John Pearce (p), Dave Green (b) and Steve Brown (dr). He is currently active touring all over Europe.
He has had over forty albums as a lead most on the Concord Records label.
You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me

Seems to act just like a drug
You're getting to be a habit with me
Let me stay in your arms
I'm addicted to your charms
You're getting to be a habit with me
I used to think your love was something that I could take or leave alone
But now I couldn't do without my supply
Oh, I can't break away
I must have you every day
As regularly as coffee or tea
You've got me in your clutches
And I can't get free
You're getting to be a habit with me
Can't break it
You're getting to be a habit with me
You've got me in your clutches
And I can't get free
Like getting shut-eye,
You are what I need
Eternally, ohhh! my
You're getting to be a habit with me
Scott Hamilton’s “You’re Getting to be a Habit with Me” is a song that is both romantic and witty. The singer discusses how the love he shares with his partner has become a habit, similar to coffee and tea. The love shared between the two is intoxicating, acting as a drug that the singer cannot live without. As the song progresses, the singer describes how he cannot break free from his feelings for his partner, as they have become a habit he cannot shake.
The lyrics establish the idea of addiction to one’s partner, where the singer initially thought that their love was optional, and now admits their addiction to it. Using words like “supply” and “need” denotes the notion that the singer considers their partner to be a drug that they cannot live without. The song’s ending lines reiterate this idea by saying that the singer needs their partner “eternally,” establishing that their love has no end. The lines “You've got me in your clutches/ And I can't get free” reinforce the idea that the singer is trapped in their love and cannot break free.
The song has a bittersweet message, as the singer expresses the happiness and satisfaction his partner's love brings him while acknowledging the fact that his addiction to it has rendered him helpless. This idea can be interpreted in various ways; however, the song highlights the struggle that one experiences when they are unable to control one's emotions or feelings towards a personal relationship.
