He emerged in the 1970s and at the time he was considered to be one of the few musicians of real talent who carried the tradition of the classic jazz tenor saxophone in the style of Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins as well as Zoot Sims and Don Byas forward. He began playing in various rhythm & blues outfits in Providence (Rhode Island), but subsequently shifted to jazz and the tenor saxophone. In 1976 he moved to New York City at, in part the recommendation of Roy Eldridge. He there joined Benny Goodman for a period of time. During this time, he also developed an alcohol problem.,[1] In the early 1980's he had formed his own quintet and toured all over the world. By then free from his drinking habit, in 1982 he had matured sufficiently to be able to break away from the spell of mainly Ben Webster and Zoot Sims, of whom he had been criticized of imitating. From this point on both his playing and his tone was very much his own.
Living in New York City, he toured all around the world during the 1980's, playing Japan and all over Europe. He was in particular a recurrent visitor to the UK, Sweden and the Grand Parade du Jazz, held in Nice, France. By the early 1990's he was ready for a next step and by 1994 when he released Organic Duke, he had developed a quite singular style: a large, well rounded but still focused tone and improvising, ostensibly still based on the swing idiom (especially Ellington), but incorporating more modern elements. During this period, he relocated to London, and formed his current quartet, featuring John Pearce (p), Dave Green (b) and Steve Brown (dr). He is currently active touring all over Europe.
He has had over forty albums as a lead most on the Concord Records label.
You Can't Be in Love with a Fool
Scott Hamilton Lyrics

And when you smiled at me,
In my heart I felt a thrill you see,
That it was love at sight and
I was right to love you as I do.
Still I never dreamed that you could love me too.
Your eyes of blue, your kisses too,
I can't believe that you're in love with me.
You're telling ev'ry one I know
I'm on your mind each place we go
They can't believe that you're in love with me.
I have always placed you far above me.
I just can't imagine that you love me.
And after all is said and done,
To think that I'm the lucky one.
I can't believe that you're in love with me.
Skies are gray. I'm blue each day
When you are not around.
Ev'ry thing goes wrong, my dear I've found
But when you're by my side I fill with pride
For I'm so proud of you
It all seems too good to me to all be true
Your eyes of blue, your kisses too,
I never knew what they could do.
The lyrics to Scott Hamilton's "You Can't Be in Love with a Fool" speak of a love that is both unexpected and seemingly unattainable. The singer describes the moment when they first fell in love with their partner, but they never imagined that their love could be reciprocated. However, to their surprise, their partner has fallen in love with them as well, and the singer can't believe their good fortune.
The verses speak of the disbelief that comes with such a love. The singer lists the reasons why they never imagined that their partner could be in love with them: they have always placed their partner far above themselves, they are convinced that their partner is too good for them, and they feel unworthy of such love. The chorus repeats the same sentiment about disbelief, that others can't believe the singer's luck in finding such love.
The bridge speaks of the impact this love has on the singer's life. Without their partner, everything seems wrong and they feel blue. But when their partner is by their side, they fill with pride and are amazed at their good fortune. Overall, the song speaks of the transformative power of unexpected love, and how it can lift us up even when we feel unworthy.
