He emerged in the 1970s and at the time he was considered to be one of the few musicians of real talent who carried the tradition of the classic jazz tenor saxophone in the style of Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins as well as Zoot Sims and Don Byas forward. He began playing in various rhythm & blues outfits in Providence (Rhode Island), but subsequently shifted to jazz and the tenor saxophone. In 1976 he moved to New York City at, in part the recommendation of Roy Eldridge. He there joined Benny Goodman for a period of time. During this time, he also developed an alcohol problem.,[1] In the early 1980's he had formed his own quintet and toured all over the world. By then free from his drinking habit, in 1982 he had matured sufficiently to be able to break away from the spell of mainly Ben Webster and Zoot Sims, of whom he had been criticized of imitating. From this point on both his playing and his tone was very much his own.
Living in New York City, he toured all around the world during the 1980's, playing Japan and all over Europe. He was in particular a recurrent visitor to the UK, Sweden and the Grand Parade du Jazz, held in Nice, France. By the early 1990's he was ready for a next step and by 1994 when he released Organic Duke, he had developed a quite singular style: a large, well rounded but still focused tone and improvising, ostensibly still based on the swing idiom (especially Ellington), but incorporating more modern elements. During this period, he relocated to London, and formed his current quartet, featuring John Pearce (p), Dave Green (b) and Steve Brown (dr). He is currently active touring all over Europe.
He has had over forty albums as a lead most on the Concord Records label.
You Go To My Head
Scott Hamilton Lyrics

And you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
You go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
The thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought to my plea, cast a spell over me
Still I say to myself get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be?
You go to my head
With a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand July's
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance
You go to my head
You go to my head
The song You Go To My Head is a classic jazz standard that was written by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie in 1938. The lyrics of the song paint a vivid picture of how the person being sung about has captured the imagination and infatuated the singer, as they keep spinning around in their brain. The lyrics can be interpreted as a reflection of a person's irrational love and unreachable desires, where they know that their feelings will never be reciprocated, but they still can't help but feel completely intoxicated by the person.
The opening lines of the song "You go to my head and you linger like a haunting refrain" set the tone for the rest of the song where the person being sung about has an almost hypnotic effect on the singer. The lyrics continue to compare the feeling of being in the presence of the person to that of sipping on a sparkling burgundy brew, which can be interpreted as the singer being completely enamored by the person's presence. The line "Like the kicker in a julep or two" emphasizes this feeling of complete infatuation and being unable to let go.
The song's hook "You go to my head" is repeated multiple times in the song, emphasizing the fact that the person being sung about has left a lasting impression on the singer's mind. Although the singer knows that there is no chance of a relationship working out between them, they still can't help but be intoxicated by the person's smile and eyes, and the effect that they have on their temperature.
Overall, the song is a beautiful rendition of how the mind can be so consumed by somebody, it becomes impossible to let go even though you know it will never work out between you two. The smooth notes of the saxophone and the singer's husky voice enhance this sense of longing and infatuation, making it the perfect classic jazz number.
