(ooh-ooh, bye bye)
(ooh-ooh, bye bye)

Goodbye, baby, bye bye
Goodbye, baby, bye bye
Goodbye, baby, bye bye
I'm gonna leave you now
Goodbye, baby, bye bye
Goodbye, baby, bye bye
Goodbye, baby, bye bye
Johnny's going away

You were wrong, pretty baby, bye bye
Oh, so wrong, pretty baby, bye bye
Yes, so wrong, pretty baby, bye bye
Please don't you cry

Oh, oh, oh, oh
Goodbye, baby, baby, bye bye
Goodbye, baby, baby, bye bye
Goodbye, baby, baby, bye bye
I'm gonna leave you now

backups sing a series of 8 "baby, bye, bye's" and a bunch of oh, oh,
oh's"

Oh, goodbye, baby, bye bye
Goodbye, baby, bye bye
Goodbye, baby, bye bye
Johnny's going away

Take my hand, pretty baby, bye bye
One more time, pretty baby, bye bye
Take my hand, pretty baby, bye bye
Hope you'll understand

Oh, oh, oh, oh
Goodbye, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-by
Goodbye, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-by

(Goo-ood, bye bye)
(Goo-ood, bye bye)!!

Overall Meaning

The song "Baby Baby" by Scott Jacks is a classic goodbye song about leaving someone behind. The repeated use of "goodbye baby bye bye" emphasizes the finality of leaving someone, while Johnny's name is included as the person who is leaving. The lyrics also suggest that the relationship with the unnamed "pretty baby" wasn't healthy or successful, as the person leaving is claiming that she was wrong. Despite this, there's still a desire to console her and for her to understand, indicated by the phrase ("hope you'll understand"). The back-up singers then join in with a series of "baby bye bye" which grows as the song progresses. Overall, the lyrics speak to the pain and difficulty of ending a relationship, but also the need to move on and say goodbye.

A nice '58-'59-ish B-side .. slapped on, perhaps, for increased revenue to the artist (as author and vocalist) - and it worked, it broke into the US Hot One Hundred, so some souls asked for it. What an era! ;o)

SHE WOULDN'T LISTEN TO HIM SO HE TOLD HER..."GOODBYE BABY"❣️😥

Maybe he should have just said it instead of trying to sing to her.

Not as good as some other songs he wrote. Did Jack Scott ever chart with any songs he didn't write? I am not an expert on this music, I was only 4 years old when this record was released. But I think Jack was getting in a rut, when it came to song he chose to record.

Robert Orick

Jack's main hit period was 1958-1962. His last record to get any attention on the hot 100 was "Steps 1& 2" on Capitol Records. His last really big hit was "Burning Bridges" on Top Rank, and later reissued on Capitol Records. Jack faded from the charts by the time Beatlemania came around, but he remained a legend in the Detroit area (mainly in a small town named Hazel Park), even though he was born a Canadian. This was a B-side to one of his bigger selling records, so it's less well-known, but it did get some attention to make Music Vendor's Top 100, though it missed Billboard & Cash Box's Hot 100 entirely.
