Burning Bridges
Scott Jack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Found some letters you wrote me this morning
They told of the love we once knew
Now they're gone I burned them to ashes
Don't want nothing to remind me of you

Burning bridges behind me
It's too late to turn back now
Burning bridges behind me
All I want is to forget you somehow

Sold the house we once planned together
Said goodbye to the folks we once knew
Then I moved to a far away city
Tried so hard to forget about you

Burning bridges behind me
It's too late to turn back now

Burning bridges behind me
All I want is to forget you somehow

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Scott Jack's song Burning Bridges speak of a man who is trying to move on from a past relationship. The singer mentions having found letters from his ex-partner that were filled with love they once shared. However, he chose to burn the letters to ashes as he wishes to forget everything related to that time. The title of the song is a metaphor for the singer's decision to cut all ties with his past and move forward.

The first verse speaks of the singer finding letters written by his ex-partner. The letters represent the happy moments they shared together, and the love they once had. However, instead of holding on to the past, the singer chooses to burn them to ashes, symbolizing his desire to move on. In the second verse, the singer speaks of selling their house, saying goodbye to old friends, and moving to a faraway city. He is making a conscious effort to forget about his ex-partner and start a new life.

Overall, the song Burning Bridges is a somber reminder of love lost and moving on from past relationships. Scott Jack's powerful lyrics and the haunting melody make the listener feel the pain of the singer as he chooses to burn down his past and start a new chapter in his life.

I saw him last night (9/27/08) at the city festival in Warren, MI. After all these years he's still got it! He explained the history behind this song...when he performed it he had a strep throat and a 103 fever. He recorded it anyway and gave it his best shot. After he was feeling better he wanted to go back and re-record it, but they told him it was fine. He didn't agree, but it went on to become a big hit.

i was just entering my teens when he was popular.....sometimes, when longing to go back to those days, I will listen to his songs. With your backdround, you probably remember that this was a time
of great variety in pop music.....so very many great songs and singers came out of these day!
