It's You
Scott John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whenever it's early twilight,
I watch till a star breaks through.
Funny, it's not a star I see,
It's always you!

Whenever I roam through roses,
And lately I often do,
Funny, it's not a rose I touch,
It's always you!

If a breeze caresses me,
It's really you strolling by.
If I hear a melody,
It's merely the way you sigh.

Wherever you are you're near me,
You dare me to be untrue.

Funny, each time I fall in love,
It's always you!

Overall Meaning

In "It's You", Scott John croons about how everywhere he goes, and everything he does, reminds him of the one person he loves. He starts off by saying that when it's early twilight, and he looks up at the sky, he sees a star breaking through. However, the star he's seeing isn't really a star at all. Instead, it's the person he loves who he's constantly thinking about. Similarly, when he's wandering through rose gardens, the petals he's touching aren't really roses, but instead, the presence of his loved one.

He then goes on to describe how every caress of the breeze, every melody he hears, reminds him of his loved one. He's so consumed by the thought of his loved one that he feels like they're always with him, even if they're miles away. Scott John reveals that his loved one has such an immense hold over him that they challenge him not to be untrue. Even though he may fall in love with other people, the only person who truly has his heart is his loved one - it's always them.

Overall, "It's You" is a beautiful ode to the power of love, and how it has the ability to consume every aspect of one's life. John Scott's poignant lyrics, coupled with a romantic melody, make this song a perfect choice for anyone in love, or anyone who has ever been in love.

Dig It! Feel like dancing every time I play this masterpiece

Gill Scott-Heron,a musical and lyrical genius.

Ian

yup Shortie, I saw him live in mid 80's at Kensington - just when those trendy Londoners were getting into him - of course us northern soulies had already dipped our toes in the 70s when his Strata East anthem, 'the bottle' became massive at the Blackpool Mecca :)

J Eshun

Gil Scott Heron, his unique brand of socio/eco protest rap poetry made him stand out, this track a beautifully swinging session with Brian Jackson containing some messianic emotive vocals over a magical sou/jazz arrangements, great stuff from the duo

I was 16 and I was definitely listening✊✊✊

Ian

Gill Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson penned music that reflected the turbulence, uncertainty and increasing pessimism of the times.
Set to a contrasting background of sixties american street life, his 1976 release 'It's Your World' is filled with Scott Heron's individual eclectic soul/jazz poetry - brave new music for the time when all around jumped new legions of party freaks in roller skates and satin hot pants..

Zoran Sulc

He was a poet - but he was a great singer as well
