Originally coming to fame in the mid-1960s singing orchestral pop ballads as the frontman of The Walker Brothers, Walker went on to a solo career balancing a light entertainment/MOR ballad approach with increasing artistic innovations in arrangement and writing. Despite a series of acclaimed albums, a disastrous drop in sales forced him back into straight Middle of the road recordings with little of his own artistic input. This in turn eventually led to a Walker Brothers reunion in the mid-1970s (although the latter eventually moved, by mutual consent, into more avant-garde areas).
From the mid-1980s, Walker revived his solo career while drastically reinventing his artistic and compositional methods, via a series of acclaimed and vividly avant-garde albums. These combined his iconic voice with an unsettling avant-garde approach which owed more to modernist and post-modernist classical composition than to his pop singer past. This change in approach has been compared to "Andy Williams reinventing himself as Stockhausen".
Walker has been a continuing influence on other artists, in particular The Last Shadow Puppets, Marc Almond, Goldfrapp, Douglas Pearce of the band Death in June, Billy MacKenzie of The Associates, David Sylvian, Julian Cope, Antony Hegarty, Thom Yorke, Steven Wilson, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Trey Spruance, Perry Blake, Radiohead, Noah Lennox, Mikael Åkerfeldt, and the Divine Comedy/Neil Hannon.
Walker continued to release solo material until his death, and was signed to 4AD Records. As a record producer or guest performer he worked with a number of artists including Pulp, Ute Lemper, Bat For Lashes and Sunn O))).
The Girls And The Dogs
Scott Walker Lyrics

Are as fast as a game
Are as bright as a flame
And you're always to blame
The girls
Are as pink as the light
And as dark as the night
The girls
Are as cold as the sphinx
Always dreaming of minks
They drive you to drink
The girls
Are as soft as a sigh
That whispers good-bye
And leaves you to cry
But the dogs
Well, they're only dogs
Just wagging their tails
As they watch it end
Oh, the dogs
Well, they're only dogs
And maybe that's why
They're man's best friend
The girls
Can make you feel cold
Can make you feel old
An antique to be sold
The girls
They play with your heart
They tear you apart
You're never too smart
The girls
They throw you from towers
They'll whip you with flowers
It depends on the hours
The girls
Will treat you like trash
Or let you be brash
It depends on your cash
But the dogs
Don't depend on a thing
They just lick your face
When they see it end
Oh, the dogs
Don't depend on a thing
And maybe that's why
They're man's best friend
The girls
You know that they are vain
They will poison your brain
They will drive you insane
The girls
Will laugh at your jokes
How they love the coat on (???)
But it is all a hoax
The girls
Are still making dates
they still making you wait
and they say you are late
The girls
Are yours for a throw (?)
At least you think so
Ah but you will never know
The dogs
Well you know the dogs
They lift up a leg
As they see it end
The dogs
Well you know the dogs
And maybe that's why
They're man's best friend
The girls
They're not what they seem
They all have a scheme
They call it a dream
The girls
Are as hot as they please
And you're down on your knees
With the greatest of ease
The girls
Say you're on the right track
Then they take it all back
Tie it up in a sack
The girls
They will give it of course
But they give with such force
That it gives you remorse
But the dogs
They give nothing at all
They just lift a leg
As they watch it end
Oh, the dogs
They give nothing at all
And that's the reason why
They're man's best friend
And yet it's because of the girls
When they've knocked us about
And our tears want to shout
That we kick the dogs out
The song "The Girls And The Dogs" by Scott Walker is a reflective commentary on the complexities of romantic relationships. The first verse speaks of the alluring and irresistible nature of women, who are as fast, bright, pink or dark, cold, and soft, but also paint them as selfish and cruel. They may drive the singer to drink, leave him feeling cold and old, treat him like trash, and make him wait for dates. The chorus contrasts this with dogs, who are loyal and faithful companions, never judgmental and always there for their owners, even as life ends.
The second verse continues the theme, saying that girls are vain and scheming, pulling back when they've led someone on, and playing with hearts. They may make a man feel like he's on the right track, only to take it all back and leave him unsure. Meanwhile, dogs are always there, with no demands, ready to give unconditional love. The last line of the song provides an explanation for why people love and need the companionship of dogs. When life gets rough, and the tears begin to flow, people kick the dogs out, but not before they have provided comfort and solace in a difficult time.

The simplicity and selflessness of dogs is what makes them such ideal companions for humans. They ask for nothing and give everything.

When they've knocked us about
And our tears want to shout
That we kick the dogs out
While dogs are reliable and loving companions, sometimes humans, particularly men, lash out at them when they are hurt or emotional because dogs are the only ones around to absorb their feelings.
