Derided by critics early in his career, Weiland was known for his flamboyant and chaotic onstage persona; he was also known for constantly changing his appearance and vocal style, for his use of a megaphone in concerts for vocal effect, and for his battles with substance abuse. Now widely viewed as a talented and versatile vocalist, Weiland has been ranked in the Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists by Hit Parader (No. 57).
In 2012, Weiland formed the backing band The Wildabouts. The band received mixed reviews, and some critics and fans noted Weiland's failing health. In December 2015, Weiland died of an accidental drug overdose on his tour bus in Minnesota at the age of 48. Upon his death, many critics and peers offered re-evaluations of Weiland's life and career; those critics included David Fricke of Rolling Stone and Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, who identified Weiland as one of the "voices of the generation" alongside Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley.

Fame
Scott Weiland Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What's your name? What's your name?
Fame, makes a man take things over
Fame, lets him loose, hard to swallow
Fame, puts you there, where things are hollow
Fame
That burns your change just to keep you in, sane
Fame
Fame, what you like is in the limo
Fame, what you get is no tomorrow
Fame, what you need, you have to borrow
Fame
Fame, nine it's mine, is just his line
To bind your time, it turns you to, crime
Fame
What's your name? What's your name?
What's your name? What's your name?
Is it any wonder, I reject you first?
Fame, fame, fame, fame
Is it any wonder, you are too cool to fool?
Fame
Fame, bully for you, chilly for me
Got to get a rain check on, pain
Fame
Fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame
Fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame
Fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame
What's your name? What's your name?
What's your name? What's your name?
What's your name? What's your name?
What's your name?
The song Fame by Scott Weiland is a commentary on the destructive nature of fame and the impact it can have on a person's life. The repetition of "What's your name?" throughout the song emphasizes the loss of identity that can occur when one becomes famous. The first verse acknowledges the power that fame can have, allowing a person to take over and letting them loose, but also points out the hollowness that can accompany it. The chorus reminds us that fame is not something that comes from intelligence or talent, but rather a flame that can consume and manipulate a person's life. The second verse highlights the superficial nature of fame, where what you like is in the limo and what you get is no tomorrow. The line "Fame, nine it's mine, is just his line" refers to the infamous Andy Warhol quote "In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes," and how this can have a damaging impact on a person's sense of self.
The third and final verse touches on the negative aspects of fame, including the bullying that can come with it and the toll it can take on a person's mental health. The phrase "Got to get a rain check on, pain" suggests that the singer needs a break from the negative aspects of fame. The repetition of "Fame, fame, fame" throughout the song further emphasizes the overwhelming and all-consuming nature of fame.
