Where Were You
Scotty McCreery Lyrics

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Were you in the yard with you wife and
Children or working on some stage in LA
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke
Rising against that blue sky
Did you shout out in anger in fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry
Did you weep for the children who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below
Did you burst out with pride for the red white and blue
The heroes who died just doing what they do
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself and what really matters

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, hope and love are some good things he gave us
But the greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day
Teaching a class full of innocent children
Or driving down some cold interstate
Did you feel guilty cause you're a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her
Did you dust off that bible at home
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep

Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Speak with some stranger on the street
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watching
And turn on "I Love Lucy" re-runs
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers
Stand in line and give your own blood
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, hope and love are some good things he gave us
But the greatest is love

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, hope and love are some good things he gave us
But the greatest is love

But the greatest is love
But the greatest is love

Overall Meaning

In Scotty McCreery's song "Where Were You," the artist takes a reflective approach to the events of September 11, 2001. The opening line speaks directly to the listener, asking them where they were when the world stopped turning on that fateful day. He poses questions about how people reacted to the tragedy - whether they were with their loved ones, working, or just standing in shock, witnessing the smoke rising against the blue sky. He asks if they wept for the children who lost loved ones, prayed for the ones who didn't know, rejoiced for the ones who walked away, or sobbed for the ones who didn't make it. He also asks if they burst out with pride for the red, white, and blue and whether they looked up to heaven for an answer in times like these.

As the song progresses, Scotty turns towards his personal beliefs, stating that he is not a political man but one who believes in Jesus and talks to God. He explains the importance of faith, hope, and love, and how they are the good things that God gave us, but the greatest of them is love. The chorus repeats several times, before the song ends as it opens, with the line "Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?"

The song is a powerful reflection on the events of 9/11 and captures the feeling of shock, sorrow, and confusion that many felt in those moments. Scotty doesn't shy away from the emotional impact of the event, nor does he try to provide simple answers to the questions that arose in its aftermath. Instead, he asks the listener to reflect on their own experiences and to think about what they learned from that terrible day.

Its been 16 years.. And it all still doesnt seem real. My best friend lost her dad that day. But i was already really close to them so i feel like i lost a dad too. All the people who risked their lives that day are true heros. ❤ Some of them never got home to their families because they were saving other people. Never forget, Always remember 🙏💗💔
