I've seen it read
I've seen it read
Staring blankly into it
I'm still awake
I'm still awake
Why can't we
Keep talking
Forget me
My eyes are heavy
my brains on fire
destroying me
destroying me
The sun is rising
another day
I'm still awake
I'm still awake
Sleep walking
Why can't we
Keep talking
Forget me
Sleep walking
Why can't we
Keep talking
Forget me
Sleep walking
Why can't we
Keep talking
Forget me
The lyrics to Scratching Post's song Sleepwalking speak to the fear and anxiety that comes with not being able to control one's thoughts and actions. The opening verse, "Something awful is coming here, I've seen it read" evokes a sense of impending doom and a sense of inevitability. The singer feels like they can sense something terrible coming their way, but they can't quite put their finger on what it is. The repetition of "I've seen it read" adds to the feeling of foreboding, as if the warning is coming from an unknown and perhaps even supernatural source.
The repeated refrain of "Sleepwalking, Why can't we Keep talking, Forget me" suggests a feeling of being disconnected from reality and wanting to reconnect with others. Sleepwalking is a metaphor for feeling like you're going through life in a daze, not fully present in your own body or mind. The plea to "Keep talking" may be a plea for connection with someone else, for someone to anchor them in reality and keep them from drifting too far away. However, there's also a sense of fear that comes with that connection, as the singer worries that they may be forgotten or left behind if they're not able to keep up.
The final verse, "The sun is rising, another day, I'm still awake, I'm still awake" suggests a feeling of exhaustion and desperation. The singer has been up all night, unable to rest or let go of their worries. The repetition of "I'm still awake" emphasizes this, as if the singer is trying to convince themselves that they are still in control of their thoughts and actions. However, the fact that they are still awake despite the approaching dawn suggests that they may not be as in control as they think.
Overall, Sleepwalking is a song that captures a sense of anxiety and disconnection from reality. The lyrics use metaphors like sleepwalking to describe this feeling, and the repeated refrain of "Keep talking, Forget me" expresses a desire to connect with others while also fearing being left behind.
