1) Screaming Trees was an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington in 1985 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bass player Van Conner and drummer Mark Pickerel. Pickerel had been replaced by Barrett Martin by the time the band reached its most successful period. Although widely associated with grunge, the band's sound incorporated hard rock and psychedelic elements. During Screaming Trees' existence the band released seven studio albums, five EPs, and three compilations.
Screaming Trees is known as one of the pioneers of proto-grunge along with the Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Green River, and Malfunkshun. Screaming Trees rose to fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden and was one of the most successful underground music acts of the 1990s. The band achieved one top ten single on the Modern Rock Tracks charts. Screaming Trees were plagued by extended inactivity due to their problems with making a follow up to Dust. This led to their official breakup in 2000.

It's taking you over
Picturing something that I done
And now I'm going under
Remember how you broke through
All of this and nothing too
Times are dry, well there's nothing to do
On the human body
The frame fades out
Won't you come over tonight?
I need something this bad
I don't mind
I'm down here most of the time
Down under the world in a crawlspace
And faith becomes a shadow on the wall
Keep feeling like I do
Don't you wish you could
Find a stray ... hope in your eyes
And leave here with something good
But it's too much to take
For the human body
The frame fades out
Won't you come over tonight?
I need something this bad
I don't mind
I'm down in it most of the time
Down under the world in a crawlspace
Love, always statallite the sun
It's taking you over
The picture of something that I done
And now I'm going under
The frame fades out
Won't you come over tonight?
I need something this bad
I don't mind
I'm down in it most of the time
Down under the world in a crawlspace
The lyrics to Screaming Trees' song "Crawlspace" express a feeling of being trapped in a dark, confining space, both physically and mentally. The first stanza uses a metaphor of a satellite orbiting the sun to describe how the singer is being consumed by their love for someone else. This love has caused them to picture something they have done that is now causing them to feel overwhelmed and out of control. They feel like they are sinking or going under, which is further emphasized in the chorus where they describe being "down under the world in a crawlspace."
The second stanza refers to a time when the singer was able to break through obstacles and achieve something, but now they feel stuck and helpless. They describe the passage of time as "times are dry," and suggest that they feel like they are banging on their own body in frustration. The chorus repeats again, emphasizing the sense of desperation and isolation. The final stanza carries the same sense of desperation but adds a hint of resignation. The singer feels like their faith is just a shadow and they wish they could find a glimmer of hope, but they are afraid that it might be "too much to take for the human body."
Overall, the songs' lyrics depict a feeling of being trapped and powerless, but with a sense of yearning that suggests they have not given up hope entirely.
