1) Screaming Trees was an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington in 1985 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bass player Van Conner and drummer Mark Pickerel. Pickerel had been replaced by Barrett Martin by the time the band reached its most successful period. Although widely associated with grunge, the band's sound incorporated hard rock and psychedelic elements. During Screaming Trees' existence the band released seven studio albums, five EPs, and three compilations.
Screaming Trees is known as one of the pioneers of proto-grunge along with the Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Green River, and Malfunkshun. Screaming Trees rose to fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden and was one of the most successful underground music acts of the 1990s. The band achieved one top ten single on the Modern Rock Tracks charts. Screaming Trees were plagued by extended inactivity due to their problems with making a follow up to Dust. This led to their official breakup in 2000.

The Pathway
Screaming Trees Lyrics

The sound of the ocean destroys the silence
And he stands on the edge of the morning
With the rising tides and he's watching day lay
His will is strong but his legs are failing, yeah
On the pathway
Moving ever forward down the pathway
No mother, father, brother, sister
The whole of the ocean is bathed in sunlight
His first contact is his only sight
On the pathway
Moving ever further down the pathway
The sound of the ocean destroys the silence
As he stands on the edge of the morning
Maybe the answers don't come at all
Just the pain and echo of his call
On the pathway
Moving ever further down the pathway
Moving ever, ever further down the pathway
Go on
Pathway
In the song “The Pathway”, by Screaming Trees, the sound of the ocean overtakes the silence as the singer stands on the edge of the morning, watching the tides rise and the day lay before him. His legs are failing, but his will remains strong as he moves ever forward down the pathway. As he continues on this pathway, he throws flowers from electric circles, with no mother, father, brother, or sister in sight. The whole ocean is bathed in sunlight, and his first contact is his only sight. Perhaps the answers don't come along the way, just the pain and echo of his call. Despite this, he keeps moving ever further down the pathway, completely immersed in the sound of the ocean.
The lyrics seem to depict a pilgrimage towards enlightenment or self-discovery, as the singer moves forwards, through trials and obstacles. The sound of the ocean could represent the vastness and mystery of the universe, or a divinity or higher power leading him towards self-realization. The flowers thrown from electric circles may symbolize beauty or light given amid chaos or technological fervor. The singer's painful yet steadfast movement may denote the inevitability of personal growth and self-discovery, despite difficult or uncertain circumstances.
