1) Screaming Trees was an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington in 1985 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bass player Van Conner and drummer Mark Pickerel. Pickerel had been replaced by Barrett Martin by the time the band reached its most successful period. Although widely associated with grunge, the band's sound incorporated hard rock and psychedelic elements. During Screaming Trees' existence the band released seven studio albums, five EPs, and three compilations.
Screaming Trees is known as one of the pioneers of proto-grunge along with the Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Green River, and Malfunkshun. Screaming Trees rose to fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden and was one of the most successful underground music acts of the 1990s. The band achieved one top ten single on the Modern Rock Tracks charts. Screaming Trees were plagued by extended inactivity due to their problems with making a follow up to Dust. This led to their official breakup in 2000.

Go easy on my mind
'Cause you're this dream I'm hanging' on
And I'm trying' to meet the dawn
And the longest way I traveled
From the darkness to the light
Lord it's been a million miles
I'm half way here, I'm half way there (repeat)
All along I've been the traveler, yeah
Forever outta time
Forever just unwinds
I see the green beyond the blue
And I'm trying' to make it through
And the longest way I traveled
From the darkness to the light
Lord it seems a million miles
All my brothers
I can't unbind
I'm half way here, I'm half way there (repeat)
Oh Lord I been the traveler, yeah
It's why the world is cold
Go easy on my soul
'Cause you're this dream I'm hanging on (same as first)
I'm half way here, I'm half way there
I'm half way here, I'm half way there
All along I been the traveler, yeah
The lyrics to Screaming Trees' song "Traveler" convey a sense of yearning and searching for purpose. The opening line, "It's a broken morning outside, go easy on my mind," suggests a sense of weariness or uncertainty on the part of the singer. The subsequent lines, "Cause you're this dream I'm hanging' on, and I'm trying' to meet the dawn," reveal that the singer is holding onto a dream or goal that they are striving toward.
The song's central metaphor of travel underscores this sense of searching - the singer describes themselves as having traveled a "million miles" from darkness to light, but still feeling "half way here, half way there." There is a sense of dissatisfaction or restlessness in these lyrics, as the singer seeks to break free of "prisons" and "binds" and reach their destination.
The song's final lines - "It's why the world is cold, go easy on my soul, 'cause you're this dream I'm hanging on" - drive home the idea that the singer's dream or goal is the only thing keeping them going. The world around them may be harsh or unfeeling, but their dream provides a sense of purpose and hope.

The whole Dust album is outstanding
Mike Reiss
True but this is the only track that sounds like mid 70s Genesis.

It's the last grunge album, and one of the very best.
Mike Reiss
@Wolfdragon92584 Well, I would say it's really more of a neo-psychedelic album. I know they were labelled grunge also but I don't hear a whole lot of that on this album (more like heavy alternative in parts). Down on the upside by Soundgarden (also very good) would probably get my vote for last grunge album. There were some later albums by grunge bands though.

R.I.P Mark. Your voice is eerily yet majestically etched into my adolescent memories. Hope your travels take you safely to eternity.

This song is so beautiful

I love how this song showcases a style that Lanegan perfected in his solo career.

I woke with this melody stuck in my head and it's one of the rarer times I've remembered who it was. Really a gorgeous song that somehow sounds both before and after it's time.
