Supermarket Fantasy
Screeching Weasel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics of Screeching Weasel's song "Supermarket Fantasy" depict the singer's infatuation with a stranger he meets in a grocery store. The first verse sets the scene as he enters the store and accidentally collides with the woman's shopping cart. Their eyes meet briefly, but she turns away. Later, in the canned goods aisle, he sees her again and hopes she will notice him. However, she is too preoccupied with checking out the lima beans and artichokes. The singer's heart is "broken in pieces" by his unrequited "supermarket fantasy."
In the second verse, he tries to play it cool by checking farina off his list, but he can't stop thinking about her "perfect lips." When he sees her walking in his direction, he hopes that she is coming to talk to him. Unfortunately, he bumps into a display of cocoa puffs, and the moment is lost. As he hurries to the checkout line, he sees her again and realizes that she has been behind him the whole time. Despite his desire to "clip [her] coupons" and "squeeze [her] charmin," he can't find the courage to approach her. The song ends with the bittersweet realization that his "supermarket fantasy" will remain unfulfilled.
Overall, the lyrics of "Supermarket Fantasy" capture the experience of a fleeting attraction and the disappointment that comes with missed opportunities. The grocery store setting adds a sense of mundanity to the story, emphasizing the idea that love (or lust) can strike anywhere, even in the most banal places.
