I Lied
Scribz Riley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Remember when I said I was out with my niggas?
Hadn't left my house in a minute
Ain't invite you, I just hoped that you'd visit
It made me sad when you didn't
See the smoke in the air, I burned the bridges
Booked a flight, I had a one way ticket to heaven
Then I came back to my senses
Get my shit together, don't know how to
Thinking 'bout the day that I found you
Remember when I said I'm happier without you?

I lied
I lied
Said I'm alright
I was just fine, but it's all lies
I lied

There's just something about the truth that don't feel right
At least this way I know I'll sleep at night
Can you blame me? I just want some peace of mind

If I said I'm alright
Then I lied

Overall Meaning

In Scribz Riley's song "I Lied", the artist is reflecting on a lie he told to his lover in order to protect himself emotionally. He had claimed he was out with his male friends when in fact he was alone at home. Even though he didn't invite his lover to join him, he secretly hoped she would come to see him. When she didn't show up, he felt sad and burned bridges by booking a one-way ticket to heaven, which metaphorically suggests he was going to take a drastic action but then returned to reason. He then realizes that he needs to get his life together, but he doesn't know how to. He thinks back to when he first met his lover and how happy she made him in that moment.

The chorus of the song is a repetitive confession of the artist admitting that he lied about how he was feeling. Even though he said he didn't need and was happier without his lover, he knows he lied. He explains that sometimes telling the truth can be difficult and even though it may not be the righteous thing to do, a lie can bring temporary relief. Although he blames himself for telling the lie, he just wants to have some "peace of mind" in his relationship.

"I Lied" is a song that many people can relate to, especially those who have struggled with telling the truth in their relationships. The song talks about the guilt and fear that comes with admitting the truth, and the desire for some form of relief or stability in a relationship. As human beings, we all long for acceptance and love from others, but sometimes we compromise that by trying to shield ourselves from the harsh realities of rejected emotions. We hope that our loved ones can recognize the truth behind our lies and offer us some understanding and forgiveness.
