Visions
Sea in the Sky Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

sea in the sky
Did you think that glass foundation you built upon wasn't gonna break with you shaking at the knees?
Well, I see them.
The crack you kept so hidden beneath your feet.
When the floor below you shatters beneath the weight of all the weary eyes who've called on you but countless times, will you answer then or remain mute in your faith?
And in these visions of heaven we've lost sight of ourselves.
We've all been blinded by a promise of light at the end of the tunnel (that may or may not even come), but but we've lost faith in ourselves.
Father, if you're listening hear me out.
I know i'm a sinner just the same, but let's compromise.
You've kept to yourself for so long.
It's not that I don't believe in you, but I believe in us more.
And in the darkest of times, it was man who struck the match.
Not light cast by ghost brightens the land of the living.
And in the absence of hope, it was man who broke our backs.
No light cast by ghost illuminates.
Did you think that glass foundation you built upon wasn't gonna break with you shaking at the knees?
Well, I see them.
The crack you kept so hidden beneath your feet.
When the floor below you shatters beneath the weight of all the weary eyes who've called on you but countless times, will you answer then or remain mute in your faith?
and in these visions we've lost sight of ourselves, we've all been blinded by a promise of light at the end of the tunnel (that may not even come), but we've lost faith in ourselves.
Father, if you're listening, hear me out just for once.

Father, if you're listening hear me out just for once.
We're all in the same sinking ship

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sea in the Sky's song Visions are highly introspective and poetic, delving into themes of faith, self-doubt, and the nature of humanity. The song begins by addressing the listener as "Sea in the Sky," questioning whether they thought their foundation was unshakable despite the obvious signs of instability. The cracks in the foundation are hidden, but visible to the singer, who wonders if Sea in the Sky will continue to have faith when their world falls apart.

The song then moves into a wide-ranging critique of faith and humanity as a whole, noting how we have all become blinded by the promise of salvation and lost sight of ourselves in the process. The singer even addresses Father directly, asking for some kind of resolution or compromise between human needs and religious faith. Overall, the lyrics to Visions are thoughtful and insightful, a reflection on the struggle to maintain faith in a world that constantly challenges it.

Very nice! Good job, guys, but if I may give some constructive feedback:
The vocalist certainly has a good voice, and a clear pronunciation also helps, but the placing of the words on the rhythm (what with meter and cadence) and some of the melody, can make it seem 'awkward'. In some places, it feels unnatural, and doesn't flow as well as it could. It kind of distracted me, and I think simpel awareness of this point can help you improve, if it's appreciated. Some examples I found in this song:

0:11 - The ''with you'' was unexpectedly fast, and seemed misplaced in this text. It was almost like a rap, but this isn't a rap song, and I don't think that's what you're going for. One might try to create space by putting back some of the later words, and/or pulling forward, some of the earlier words, so that the 'with you' can be spoken at normal speed.

0:13 - The ''them'' was placed at the 4 of the bar, even though the 'them' in 'see them' seems like the words that should be stressed, and not the 'see', which is currently stressed by being placed on the 3. It's not too obvious, and you can leave it at is, but if I wrote it, I'd probably place both words back by an eighth note, so the 'them' gets closer to the 1 of the next bar. Thought not on the 1 of the next bar, which would sound much stranger than it currently is (as I said, this one isn't 'bad' per se).

0:24 - ''Of al the weary eyes, who called on you but countless times''
Most of the vocal melody stays in the same register, which is not a problem at all. It becomes more noticeable as it hovers around mostly the same notes, which could either have a positive 'dreamy' effect, or a negative 'boring' effect. However, at that specific part, it sounds too simple, as in a standard pop song, or a children's lullaby. A very simple variation could spice it up just enough to make it sound less repetitive, perhaps (currently, it just goes 71765, but twice).

One suggestion could be as such (I'm just speculating, here)
Current version: 7---7--1*----7--6---5------7------7----7---7----1-----7-----6-----5
Lyrics -------------Of all the weary eyes who called on you but countless times
Different version:7---7--1----7--6---5------7------9----10-9----7-----11----10---5

*(the 1, of course, is actually 8 in this context.)

Don't take any of this negatively - I just listen very precisely, and I love the help out where I can. If my feedback bothers you, then just keep doing what you're doing. Otherwise, I'm glad to be of help. Either way, keep up the good work!

It's refreshing to find "metal" (call it whatever you want it's not the point) with clean vocals that don't sound weak. You guys have an awesome sound and you all have great musicianship. I just heard this song for the first time and I already want to hear more from you guys. I heard cosmonauts and that was a killer instrumental!
