People Get Ready
Seal Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's a train a-coming
You don't need no baggage
You just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don't need no ticket
You just thank the Lord
People get ready
For the train to Jordan
Picking up passengers
From coast to coast
Faith is the key
Open the doors
And board them
There's room for all
Among the loved the most
There ain't no room
For the hopeless sinner
Who would hurt
All mankind just
To save his own
Have pity on those
Whose chances are thinner
Cause there's no
Hiding place
From the Kingdom's Throne
So people get ready
For the train a-comin'
You don't need no baggage
You just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don't need no ticket
You just thank
You just thank the Lord
Yeah
Ooh
Yeah
Oh
I'm getting ready
I'm getting ready
This time I'm ready
This time I'm ready
The lyrics of Seal's song People Get Ready describe a train journey to the Promised Land, where everyone is welcome regardless of their background or social status. The train symbolizes a spiritual journey that requires only faith and belief. The first verse highlights the urgency of the journey and emphasizes that there is no time to waste on baggage. The second line emphasizes that the train is coming and everyone needs to be prepared to board it. The third line says that all they need is faith, which is necessary to hear the sounds of the engine.
The second verse refers to the train taking a route to Jordan, picking up passengers from coast to coast. The train is making multiple stops to ensure that everybody who wants to get on board gets the chance to do so. Faith is key, and it opens doors that allow people to board the train. There is enough space for everyone, and the train is open to all those who are loved the most. The emphasis is on inclusion, and nobody is left behind.
The bridge highlights the fact that there is no room for those who do not care for others and only care about themselves. They cannot board the train because they do not belong there. The message is clear that empathy and concern for others are vital qualities needed in the journey towards salvation. The song ends by repeating the chorus twice and emphasizing that the singer is ready to go on the journey.

I never knew he had a video for this. I get chills everytime I hear this song. I never really cared much for seal as an artist until I had his Soul CD. I'm not a fan of cover albums also, but he sang every single song on that album with all his heart.
