Prayer For The Dying
Seal Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Da da, da da, ah, ho-oo-oh-oo

Fearless people careless needle
Harsh words spoken and lives are broken
Forceful aging help me I'm fading
Heaven's waiting it's time to move on

Crossing that bridge with lessons I've learned
Playing with fire and not getting burned
I may not know what you're going through
But time is the space between me and you
Life carries on, ooh
It goes on

Just say die and that would be pessimistic
In your mind we can walk across the water
Please don't cry it's just a prayer for the dying
I just don't know what's got into me

Been crossing that bridge with lessons I've learned (learned)
Playing with fire and not getting burned (burned)
I may not know what you're going through
But time is the space between me and you
There is a light through that window
Hold on say yes while people say no
Life carries on, on, on, on, ooh
It goes on, oh-ee-oh, whoa-ee-oh, ho, oh

I'm crossing that bridge with lessons (I've learned)
I'm playing with fire and not getting burned (burned)
I may not know what you're going through
But time is the space between me and you
There is a light through that window
Hold on say yes while people say no

'Cause life carries on oh-ee-oh, whoa-ee-oh ho on
It goes on, oh-ee-on, it goes on
Whoah, whoah, life carries on
When nothing else matters
When nothing else matters
I just don't know what's got into me

It's just a prayer for the dying
For the dying

Overall Meaning

"Prayer For The Dying" is a song by British singer Seal. The song was released in 1994 as the lead single from his second studio album "Seal (1994)". The song is a ballad that talks about the struggles of life and how we could overcome it by being positive and letting go of pessimism. The lyrics carry a deeper message that encourages people to overcome their fears and face the world with hope and faith.

The first verse talks about the harsh words that people often speak and how it can break lives. Aging is also mentioned, and the person singing is getting help to not fade away. He then says that Heaven is waiting, and it's time to move on. The second verse is more hopeful as it talks about life that goes on despite the struggles. It mentions playing with fire and not getting burned, which could be interpreted to mean that taking risks is necessary for progress in life.

The chorus of the song speaks about the positive outlook one should have towards life. The phrase "Just say die and that would be pessimistic" means that one should not give up easily or be negative. The line "In your mind, we can walk across the water" is figurative and means that the person's mind is powerful and could overcome any obstacle. The singer encourages one not to cry but instead have faith, and he calls it a prayer for the dying.

I had the honor of seeing Seal at the Beacon Theatre end of May and he's a true artist. There is something so ageless about him and his music, it transcends space and time. Just absolutely profound, deep, interesting. The concert was life changing for me, his music is truly a Blessing.

I'm a grown man, long jaded by this world. I never tap into my emotional side.

But this song makes me cry. It makes me yearn for the most authentic and loving connections. It reminds me of the brevity of life and to not take it so seriously.
