Diamond Girl
Seals & Crofts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Diamond Girl - you sure do shine
Glad I found you - glad you're mine
Oh my love you're like a precious stone
Part of earth where heaven has rained on

Makes no difference where you are
Day or nighttime you're like a shinin' star
And how could I shine without you
When it's about you that I am

Diamond Girl - roamin' wild
Such a rare thing - radiant child
I could never find another one like you
Part of me is deep down inside you

Can't you feel the whole world's a-turnin'
We are real and we are a-burnin'
Diamond Girl now that I've found you
It's around you that I am

Diamond Girl - you sure do shine
Diamond Girl - you sure do shine

Diamond Girl - you sure do shine
Diamond Girl - you sure do shine

Overall Meaning

Seals & Crofts's hit song Diamond Girl is a love song that appreciates the beauty and uniqueness of a woman that the singer adores. The lyrics use the metaphor of a precious stone to illustrate the value of the woman. The word "diamond" itself connotes rarity, hardness, and radiance, which are all the characteristics the singer sees in his lover. The singer appears to be in awe of his lover and grateful that he found her. He sees her as a valuable part of the earth that has been blessed with heaven's rain, indicating that she is an unusual and exceptional person. The song's overall message is one of admiration and devotion.

The singer also seems to suggest that their love transcends time and space. He notes that wherever she is, day or night, she shines like a "shinin' star." He asserts that he cannot shine without her, indicating that their love is mutually beneficial. Moreover, he believes that he and his lover are meant to be together. He calls her a "rare thing" and a "radiant child," indicating that he sees her as someone special and unique. He expresses that part of him is deeply embedded in her and emphasizes their strong bond.

Overall, Diamond Girl is a romantic and heartfelt love song that highlights the value and beauty of a woman. Jim Seals, who as part of the duo Seals and Crofts crafted memorably wistful 1970s hits like “Summer Breeze” and “Diamond Girl,” died this past Monday at age 80.

Jim Seals as the primary lead vocalist of the harmonizing duo, Seals and Crofts came to be the very emblem of “soft rock” with a run of hits that lasted for only about six years. Although none of the pair’s hits ever reached No. 1 on the Hot 100, their biggest songs were for a time as ubiquitous as any that did top the chart. “Summer Breeze” in 1972 and “Diamond Girl” in 1973 both reached No. 6 on the Billboard charts.

A song from my youth when AM radio ruled the dial.

RIP Jim Seals, you were a special man!
