Not Too Amused
Sebadoh Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What was that you just said?
That didn't make any sense to me
It's not the way I see it, man
I'm almost tired of listening to you
Why do you tie me up with words?
The way your eye shifts makes me wanna go
Black-jawed living room couch professor
When will you be through with me? I'd like to know
Everywhere I go I feel it
But I won't talk, I won't get stuck with you
Everyone's so lonely I dig it
But I'm afraid I can't share this with you
So don't make me your captive
I don't feel like talking your shit

I nod my broken head
I'm not too amused with humans

Overall Meaning

Sebadoh's song "Not Too Amused" is a critique of human communication and the struggle to connect with others when they are not able to see things from the same perspective. The singer is tired of listening to someone who is not making any sense to him and he feels tied up with words that have no meaning. The way he sees things is different from the other person and he wonders when he will be through with their conversation.

The singer feels lonely and disconnected from others because they are not able to share his thoughts and feelings. He is not interested in talking about trivial and meaningless things that are only meant to entertain others. He is not amused with humans and their inability to understand each other.

The line "Black-jawed living room couch professor" is a sarcastic jab at people who think they know everything but have not really experienced life. The singer is tired of listening to someone who thinks they are an expert but really have no idea what they are talking about.

Man this song fucking floors me. Every time I hear it I get goosebumps. The emotion in his voice, the tight drums, the eerie sinister guitar building to a crescendo finish. The lyrics are just so fucking real, almost not even lyrics, just like a man's thoughts or his part of a conversation, the delivery of them feels so fucking real . "I DON'T FEEL LIKE TALKING YOUR SHIT" packs such a fucking punch. I had a difficult period with my girlfriend a few months ago and walking to work listening to this song with tears in my eyes helped me shed the emotions out of me.
This song is just the epitome of reaching a boiling point, both musically with the instruments and the lyrics. I can really imagine someone reciting these words to a terribly manipulative or unfair partner and then storming out of the room
I'll never forget about this song as long as I live

It was a young man's raging thoughts against his abusive and alcoholic father, you're not far off.
