The band was first named Galaxy Gramophone, but changed the name to Second-Hand Furniture when the singer Miralda Madar Johansson joined the band and when they'd found their sound. After the first cd-r (self titled, 2003, 100 copies)was given away for free to indiepop-lovers, the first cd-r was later released by Yellow Mica Recordings, and the second cd-r "Nice Try, Sunshine EP" was released a few months later at Smashing Time Rec. In 2004 Second-Hand Furniture reached its peak with a handful of gigs around Sweden and a vinyl release at Fabulous Friends Records, Everything Will Fall EP 7'' (sold out!). In 2005 the guitarist Tobias Muller left the band, and was replaced by Petter Utbult(aka Mr.Pedro). The band did only two more gigs, and the gig in Gothenburg the 7th of July became their last performance as a band. They recorded two unreleased songs during the summer of 2005 ("Extreme Rightwing-Soldiers" and "There's Nothing To Celebrate") No official split has been announced from the band, but since 2005 the band members went to London, Argentina and the U.S, which made it difficult to maintain the creativity without rehearsing and seeing each other.

My mother’s family is from Hazard County KY. (She was born in 1940) She has told the story of being 10-12 years old and being in the General Store in Heinman, KY and one of the “Blue People” coming in to purchase supplies. My Grandmother told her not to stare, and as she recalled the man was a dusty light blue shade. She told that story for years and until the internet nobody really believed it.

I grew up in an area of Pennsylvania where this is a real problem, but it's a dirty secret people don't really talk about. THAT is the problem. At least in Iceland they discuss it, so it can be addressed.

There were two families in my town that were all inbred and all of them were in "special" classes. In fact, an insult was to call someone their last name, or a slur based on their name. The funny thing is they were an OLD OLD family, and owned a huge amount of land, even though none of them had educations of jobs. They wouldn't sell their land, so it was a super weird situation. They lived in poverty sitting on million dollars worth of land (today at least). Broken downs cars and appliances all over their yards, houses falling apart, and crazy hand me down clothing. Kinda sad.

I also turned into a blue person for a short time, although I have NO relation to the family of Blue People. Acute Methemoglobinemia (meaning not genetic) can also be caused by certain medications, such as local anesthetics. I found out the hard way that I am apparently very sensitive to these drugs and was treated with IV Methylene Blue as well. It happened over the course or an hour or two after a procedure I had & I started to turn blue and lose consciousness. It was extremely scary for both me and my parents. Once the toxicologist figured out what was wrong with me, they brought in all the medical students because it was such a rare thing to get to see in person. My blood was only carrying about 50% of the normal amount of oxygen. Methemoglobinemia basically makes your red blood cells less “sticky” so they’re not able to bind with and carry oxygen molecules as they normally would.
The really interesting part that no one warned me about is that when you inject something dark blue into your veins, the first time you pee after that, it’s dark green! So I thought I was dying all over again. Funny now, not so funny back then! It took several days for that to work it’s way out of my system but the Methylene Blue literally saved my life and worked very quickly once they figured it out. That part took hours.

We had a family JUST like that, at the grocery store I worked at. They went to our high school, & lower.
And they are VERY nice people. But, it seemed as if both parents had some mental deficiencies, that also caused some physical deformities.
I mean all of this, with the utmost respect. Because they are VERY sweet people, who just got a bad shake or dealt a rough hand.
The daughter is my age, & I am friends with her on FB. She couldn’t BE a nicer person, & you KNOW she heard hell her whole life. Her younger brother was the worst, & ever could speak…he could only grunt & moan. I always felt so bad for them. They had to walk everywhere, & had no car. So, they had to walk blocks to the grocery store, which the son also had a waking issue. Then, shop, & then walk home. I always wanted to give them a ride home, when working there in high school. But, I couldn’t leave my job, to do it.

So, I have a similar experience, in my life. This was the late-90s, when I was a Junior & Senior, in HS. We just…we didn’t make fun of them, or crack on them, even behind their backs. People still hear those things, at some point. But, also treated them like human beings, with the respect deserved for being such. I was bullied, too. So, I can understand that side. I can’t imagine what they went through, in a cruel world of the late-90s.
Anyway….just had to share that. Lol!

My parents are related, and we only found out when I was 15 after me getting genetic testing for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. @electrictroy2010 technically yes. Make sure enough DNA to ensure no genetic incompatibility, while not sharing so much that it causes negative recessive traits to express themselves, but I would also argue that this isn't particularly relevant.
In a world with modern medicine and the increasing ability to analyze and manipulate genomes, this kind of planning just simply isn't required.

They're also probably isn't as much of a stigma around 3rd and 4th cousins, because a lot of people don't even know their third and fourth cousins due to being so far removed. The stigma is mostly around sibling, parent, and first and second cousin marriages.

I'm also very concerned why you seem so defensive of inbreeding, even if you're a specific scenario isn't that bad. Like, you posted this exact comment dozens of times on a years old video.

Yeah that was one of the bigger surprises I had during an undergrad anthropology course. Most societies up until the past 100-200 years would mate with their first and second cousins. It kind of makes sense as it isn't your immediate family and if you're living in a relatively small village in, say, 500 BC Germania, it's distant enough to not be super weird but close enough to solidify your clan's strength.

I'm sure you're aware, but just in case, the "eye thing" is called "ptosis". One notable case was Phineas Gage who had ptosis in the left eye after his amazing survival of having an enormous iron rod shot through one side of his head. Because of this video, I watched "The Hollows." It's a lovely piece of 70s documentary with no commentary, no guidance, just letting the images and the people speak for themselves for better or for worse.
It occurred to me that folks who encounter these people are likely to fall into two categories:
1) Mean people will make fun of them. This is just awful.
2) Look down on them. Pity them. This too is just awful. Pity means you look down on them. They need help, and you know what's better for them than they do.
I think a more respectful way might be to offer them a little bit more comfort (e.g. indoor plumbing), and let them decide what they do or do not want. They should engage life however they wish.

While I never found any signs of siblings marrying siblings, there were some first cousin marriages and second cousin marriages were fairly frequent. When that happens, particularly where both parties had the same last names, it can become very convoluted and difficult to unravel family relationships. But it seems that in colonial and early US history, it was not unusual for extended family groups to move into unsettled territory and settle together, so interbreeding was often a problem until more settlers arrived.

@Marie Bernier I grew up in a village with some 200 citizens. Looking back I remember at least 10 individuals with more or less severe mental disorders.
Plain countryside with normal functions and part of a superb infrastructure.

To day unthinkable numbers, except for a certain religious minoritys ghetto lifestyle.
Instead of being institutionalised they lived more or less independently as part of family and our community.
Guess troubled birth conditions was part of the explanation.

Good information. My mother and her younger sister both had children by first cousins. Both are physically "normal" but both have psychological and emotional issues. The "family" to this day, refuse to accept knowledge of the close family ties. Remains a barrier to conversation to this day

It has struck me many times in the past that could it be that we are all the product on inbreeding in one way or another over the centuries and if so what would we have looked like if it had never happened? Would we be more intelligent, stronger, taller, better looking?

I have 2 double cousins. I accidentally made out with my cousin. I lived in a small-town in Kentucky. I had no idea we were related until later. And in Appalachia many of the people have eyes that are oddly shaped. Sort of a downward angle. It happens a lot more than people realize.

Joe, I grew up in a small Southern town, also, and there was a family "like that" who lived on the outskirts of town. Every Christmas, people took up a donation for them in the local churches. Not to go all Faulkner on you, but at one time, many America towns had such a family on their periphery, an unseemly tidbit of local history most are grateful to whitewash or forget.

I knew a girl at the church I was raised in who told us a story about her parents. One had been adopted or was an orphan, something where that parent didn't know much about their biological family. Anyhow, a few years after this chick was born, which was fairly shortly after her folks were married, they found out more about the bio family of that parent. Turns out they were first cousins. Better than siblings, but not by a whole lot. Luckily, it was the first (and only, I assume) time this happened in that family line, so the girl I knew was genetically fine. So far as she knew, anyhow. We were only teenagers. It was by brave of her to share this with out youth group, though it was a fairly secular group of kids who tended to be really supportive and understanding, but it was still so uncomfortable to learn about at 14. I hope I was kind and empathetic enough towards her about it.

They were from India and I didn't know what was going on until the brother of the bride referred to the groom as his "cousin and new brother in law." No one else seemed to think it was weird. I researched my genealogy and the maternal side had grandparents who were distantly related by their grandparents (and incidentally I was contacted by someone who used the same website and took the dna test, who asked about the higher percentage of dna in relation, and it turns out that same surname of hers was the name they were connected by. . .)

My surname itself has very little background, though they might have resembled some of the smaller, isolated communities which tend to have a higher incidence of genetic similarity (usually groups like the Amish or Jewish communities are like this due to social dynamics) and due to a poorer background which would have been one of the poorer farms in the mid 19th century.

The British nobility also knew that close genetic relations were a bad thing, and actively sought out foreign nobles (which incidentally was also to expand their empire.) In spite of this it was also at a time when people like Anne Boleyn felt compelled to commit incest with her brother in order to have an offspring, as it was believed the child might be more difficult to detect infidelity due to resemblance to her, but also because of pressure to have a child which Henry VIII seemed to have some difficulty conceiving due to his brain injury.

In many states the legality of cousin marriage depends on getting a genetics test or proving sterility (usually with older people 65+). Given how many people depend on the spouse's health insurance or retirement account, this actually makes sense from a standpoint of a social safety net.

Fun fact: i went to HS with a girl that had a kid with her brother. I live in a pretty small iowan city. This happened in the late 90s. I know the brother was arrested (he was adult) idk about her. But she was gone from school pretty fast. I was actually somewhat friends with her before all of this. All i know was she came from a poor family. Seemed like a nice girl.. a little off.
